The Return of Real R&B with a Touch of Soul.,
By "iforever1" (Philadelphia, PA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Your Woman (Audio CD)
This CD is hot. I don't think it's fair to compare Sunshine to any other artist because her own personality blasts through so hard on each track. Also I've seen her in person and the personality you hear on the tracks represent her true self. With that said the whole CD is full of soulful R&B energy. Sunshine's vocals are down to earth all the way through and remind you of what good R&B is and used to be. No derogatory comments about sex, men, or women just soulful intelligent lyrics and creative music. The production is done very well also. Mike City did most of the tracks and his production is a clear view to the future direction of R&B. The whole CD has hard hitting drum lines that will surely make you want to dance with no question. The acoustic sounding bass, horns, and mellow piano chords have a very soulful sound sort of like Prince meets Roy Ayers with a little Donald Bird mixed in. The sound isn't dragged down with to many samples which makes each track unique in its own way. Mike City also did Carl Thomas's, "I wish I never meet her". On the whole if you like good music without the kiddy nonsense you'll love this CD.

Disappointing......,

Well, it seems as her two radio releases are pretty much the best songs on her album. You can certainly tell this is her first album from her voice. She can sing, but she can't SANG. I think she would benefit greatly from a voice coach, someone who could refine her voice just a little......

Im sorry to say that I seem to be in the minority... I don't disagree that "HEARD IT ALL BEFORE" is a strong debut single but I was a little disappointed with the album as a whole. I would seriously look at India Arie and Jill Scott before this, alot more 'soulful'.

We haven't really "Heard It All Before",
By J. Highsmith (Mitchellville, Maryland United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Your Woman (Audio CD)
After hearing the song "Heard It All Before" on the radio for atleast 5 to 10 times, I didn't know that Sunshine Anderson was the singer until I saw the advertisement for her CD on BET. I liked the song a lot and I knew I would pick this CD up on it's release date. After listening to this CD, it sounds like Sunshine is a seasoned artist and I know that people that like r&b music will enjoy her debut CD. The CD starts off with the uptempo songs but gradually gives you the midtempo and slow songs as well. The majority of the production is handled by Mike City and all the music is produced by Beat Brokas' Ent. After you listen to "Your Woman" 2 or 3 times, you will be reminded of Mary J. Blige's "What's The 411" and Faith Evans' "Faith", in my opinion. That is not a problem though, because Sunshine does have a distinctive sound throughout the CD. Just as India Arie's "Acoustic Soul" demonstrates, it's nice to hear some down to earth, positive r&b music. My favorites so far include "Where Have You Been", "Lunch Or Dinner", "Last Night" w/Anthony Hamilton & Dolo Pichino, "Being Away" & "Crazy Love". Although all of her songs make the grade, I will give a slight advantage to the slow and midtempo songs on this CD. Overall, Sunshine Anderson has a nice debut on her hands and should have a brilliant future as a singer.

Sunshine Rises On "Your Woman",
By milo bosh (Chicago, IL USA) - See all my reviews

Assertive, decisive, and honest are the first words that come to mind when describing Sunshine Anderson's debut CD "Your Woman." Laced with the same Old School charm, banging beats, and no-nonsense aggression that's reminiscent of Mary J. Blige, the Charlotte, NC native radiates on tracks like "Better Off" and "Where Have You Been." Anderson's sista girl savvy animates many of the arrangements especially on the hit single "Heard It All Before" where she unabashedly stomps on a souring partnership. ("Got me 'bout to call my peeps and take it to the street," she huffs.) Even when her attitude is toned down, the singer's tempered, straightforward delivery is apparent: "Lunch Or Dinner" and "Letting Down My Guard" have a conversational feel and the brief skit "Vulnerability" could easily be a journal entry set to music. Noteworthy is "Crazy Love" which features a superb (and haunting) supporting vocal performance by smooth song siren Lalah Hathaway. As Anderson bemoans a dysfunctional relationship, Hathaway's distinctive sound hovers over the track as a "voice of reason" giving the song added psychological--and aural--power.[Note: CD contains booklet with lyrics to all songs. Total playing time, 59 minutes, 27 seconds.]

Hip-Hop-Soul,
By The Critic (Mississauga, Ontario, Canada) - See all my reviews

I read all the reviews, and nobody mentioned that is has a Hip-Hop Soul vibe to it. What people fail realize on this review messageboard is that the music industry is seriously lacking Hip-Hop-Soul and Hip-Hop as a whole. See Mike City (the producer of this Sunshine album) is getting slept on lovely =(Here's the list of Hip Hop Soul albums of lately that I'm feeling: 1/2. Carl Thomas - "Emotional" (2000) 1. Amerie - "All I Have" (2002) 2. Sunshine Anderson - "Your Woman" (2000/2001) 3. Donell Jones - "My Heart" (1996) 4. Usher - self-titled debut (1994) and 8701 (2001); the Confessions CD should go take a nap. 5. Yvette Michele - "My Dream" (1997) 6. Soul For Real - "For Life" (1996) and "Candy Rain" (1994/1995) 7. Mary J. Blige - "Whats The 411" (1992), "My Life" (1994), "Mary" (1999) [good comeback CD for her] 8. Faith Evans - "Faithfully" (2001) [good comeback CD for her career], "Faith" (1995) and NOT kEEP THE FAITH..THAT WAS HER WORSE CD (even though she had a couple of joints on it) 9. Davina - "Best of Both Worlds" (1998) 10. Leschea - "Rhythm & Beats" (1997) 11. the first Jill Scott CD (1999) 12. Angie Stone's 2001 "Mahogany Soul" CD 13. Frankie - "My Heart Belongs To You" (1997) [before Musiq Soulchild, there was Frankie...he told the Al B Sure vibe to the neosoul/hip-hop soul level - reminds you of a younger version of Musiq] 14. J. Lo - "That Was Me..Then" (2002) [everybody hates J Lo but this is her best CD and it was a Hip Hop Soul CD cuz she worked with mad NY producers] - I don't judge people's music and their personal life the same way so go figure. 15. Veronica Vasquez - "V..As In Veronica" (1995) and "Rise" (1997) [she got slept on crazily!!! Sounds like J Lo with vocal training -- she should be eating on that Boricua diva soul plate, not J Lo even though J Lo's last CD was bangin] 16. J. Quest - "The Quest Is On" (1995) [I'm trying to figure out if Frankie J. and J. Quest are the same artists with different names...because they are both Latino and sound the same when singing]. Peace \/

I like Sunshine, but.....,
By Erica Day "MrsDay" (pittsburgh, pa usa) - See all my reviews

I liked "Heard It All Before" the first time I heard it, and I was looking forward to getting the album. I'm not downing Sunshine's talent, but she needs better material. The songs on this album didn't do anything for me. The only reason I listened to the whole thing is because, well, I listen to every CD I buy at least once. I love her voice, and I hope she gets better material next time around. I'm still a fan.

Heard It All Before,
By gobirds2 (New England) - See all my reviews

Unfortunately it does sound like I heard it all before. I think there is some talent here but her choice of material and her choice of delivering that material (her vocal style) is not going to distinguish her or bring her to the forefront for very long if at all. If you like her that's good, but this CD isn't going to hit you over the head and say "Wow!" I do like the CD cover and she does look sincere.
