Editorial Reviews

Digitally remastered two-fer containing a pair of albums (plus bonus tracks) from the '60s Pop Rock legends. This set contains their fifth and sixth albums from 1967. You're A Big Boy Now was the soundtrack of one of Francis Ford Coppola's earliest films, which features the hit '"Darling Be Home Soon' and was the band's last album with guitarist Zal Yanovsky. Everything Playing was the band's last album with John Sebastian and features the hits 'She Is Still A Mystery', 'Six O'Clock' and 'Money'. This release also features three bonus tracks, and the booklet is fully annotated.

Nicely fills two key gaps in my Lovin' Spoonful playlist. The audio quality is very good (for my ears, anyway) and the packaging, which includes some useful and interesting (again, to me) liner notes, is well done. While I would have liked to have acquired these albums as individually issued CDs, this package allowed me to get them at a far more satisfactory price.

For the above reasons, I'd give this five stars. The one thing that brings things down a bit is that these albums just aren't the Spoonful at their best. Both are pleasant listens that deliver some fun and even a couple of essentials, but were recorded on the cusp of transitions that pretty much brought the good times to an end.

The early Spoonful records were wonderful and there are some good songs on "Everything Playing" but the mix on that record always has been poor, maybe too many overdubs. The loss of Zal obviously knocked a hole in the talent pool. "You're a big boy now" is not as good a soundtrack as "Tiger Lily". Seeing the footage of John Sebastian falling around the stage at Woodstock, maybe he just smoked himself stupid.
