La Toya: People had this image of the Jacksons as the perfect American family and I destroyed that image,
This review is from: You're Gonna Get (Audio CD)
I got this from one of those dollar stores, years and years ago. But I never could get into this cassette. I've always loved La Toya because she is so dramatic and theatrical and beautiful but frankly her music isn't very enjoyable or entertaining. All of these songs on this album sound very amateurish and almost have an underground quality to them; it almost sounds like 1 big song. I also have her country CD which falls in the so bad it's funny category. IMO La Toya should write a book, because that's where her talents are; she's a great story-teller. But from what I understand, her family put a stop to all the nonsense about 10 years ago when they "welcomed her back into the family." Since then, La Toya has recanted all of her outrageous and completely ludicrous statements. I am happy that she reconciled with her mother and father. Because even during all those years when La Toya went on coast-to-coast TV and said such hateful things about them you could always see that she was hurting and still really wanted a relationship with them. And I always think it's so funny when people criticize La Toya now for defending her brother. God forbid, if my brother or sister was ever accused of a horrible crime, I would sooner cut off my hand than say disparaging things about them because that's my family. So I can totally understand where she is coming from now. At least no one can ever say La Toya used Michael or Janet to advance her musical career.

it's good,

It's produced by Full Force and gave La Toya the spotlight in Europe and it actually is quite good. It's catchy, it was trendy and it's still interesting to listen to.

BETTER THAN WHAT YOU MIGHT EXPECT,
By A Customer
This review is from: You're Gonna Get (Audio CD)
This album is actually pretty good. She worked with a variety of different producers and some work..some don't. Full Force produced the title song which is actually pretty funky. But the spoken beginning is alot like the spoken intro to "Control"..suddenly announcing that this is the "new" LaToya so watch out!..They also produced a sickly sweet ballad "Not Giving Up on Love" that doesn't showcase her voice in the best light. Better give up on songs like this. "Does it Really Matter" is a perfect slice of eurodisco..with it's sly electronic beat and vapid faceless vocals..almost anyone could have sung this song and made it sound just as good. "Just Say No" is a tuneful song about not succumbing to drugs...sorry..no song by a Jackson is going to get some kid to not do drugs..The song is good, however. Since I don't have the acutal tape in front of me I'm not sure of this next title..but there is a song with the word "radio" in the title which is pretty good..upbeat..and a duet with some guy whose name escapes me..(and who has not been heard from since) called "If I Could Only Get to You" also a good song. Funky, up-beat..nice jam! You know..this album was good and sure she can't really sing that great..but she's not THAT BAD!!! Can Janet really sing? Well, not really! LaToya's contributions to record need to be represented on cd more. So there needs to be either a comprehensive compilation or her albums need to be released on cd. She made a song with Michael called "Nighttime Lover" which was awesome.. Mike wrote and produced it..Also her 2nd album "My Special Love' has some pretty good songs..some written by her brothers..and one "Camp Kuchi Kaiai" written with Janet.. Please forgive the title it's a good song. Also "Heart Don't Lie" was a minor hit..Her next album "Imagination" was good and had a song called "He's a Pretender" that was a hit for another group. Also a song called "On a Night Like This" which was a cross between "Rhythm of the Night" and "La Isla Bonita". Yes, I know way too much about Latoya's music but I just feel strongly about this. Search this cd or tape out..you won't be sorry. Or any of her other cd's...but I'll warn ya.."Bad Girl" is well..bad..sounds very dated sorry!

Not As Bad As Everyone Thinks,
This review is from: You're Gonna Get (Audio CD)
Okay LaToya isn't the greatest singer in the world, but face it none of the Jacksons are terrific singers, just good performers. Though Janet and Michael are good performers, they also have very limited vocal ranges that can't compare to Whitney, Chaka, or Patti.Anyways... this cd isn't as bad as you might think. Had LaToya had better management and remixed a few of the songs, I think it would have given her career the boost it desperately needed. The two highlights are "Turn On The Radio" and "Tell Me She Means Nothing To You". Had they been remixed, "Such A Wicked Love", "You're Gonna Get Rocked", and "Ain't Nobody Loves You" would have been better songs. "You Blew" and "Just Say No" should have been scrapped. With all of her albums, there are usually 2 or 3 good songs on each that could put her on the charts, but sadly the wrong songs get picked as lead singles and therefore the albums suffer and die a quick death.

From Latoya to You're Gonna Get Rocked,

After a long and lengthy process Of trying to find this album, I realised it had been renamed and reissued. As other reviewers have already said it reminds you of Janet Jackson's control and that is why I think it is a great album. If you love that album you will love this one, it is like Janet's early work. I do prefer the tracks such as 'If I could get to you, Just say No, Tell me he means nothing to you, (aint nobody loves you) like I do, Turn on the radio', but the others are o.k also, Great for your Pop/dance/r'n'b /80's collection.

LaToya Jackson is hands-down the most underrated artist of ALL TIME!!! It's almost criminal how under-appreciated, and even disrespected she is. But the truth is, LaToya is an amazing singer, who displays overwhelming power and emotion. I feel very fortunate to be able to appreciate her and her amazing music. You're Gonna Get Rocked is among her finest recordings to date. The album's title track is nothing short of amazing, she just displays so much attitude!!! Every song here is a gem. There is not one bad, or even mediocre track here. If you're new to LaToya, this is an excellent place to start, and it will have you rushing out to find all of her recordings in no time!

La Toya Has More Talent Than People Give Her Credit For,
By Michael (San Diego, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: You're Gonna Get (Audio CD)
When I first heard La Toya Jackson had a singing career, I scoffed and laughed. I had heard that she had a terrible singing voice and was just all around awful. My Grandpa knowing that I was a huge Michael and Janet Jackson fan bought me a VHS tape of La Toya Jackson of her performing in Las Vegas at Bally's around 1991. I believe that tape is out of print now. I never gave it a thought for many years but when I was 15 I decided to actually watch it. I did watch it and I was stunned. The first song she performed was "You're Gonna Get Rocked" and I was stunned. The song was actually good. It even showed clips from the video. The video was cool too. I watched the whole tape and liked every song. I then tried to download more songs by La Toya and there wasn't much of a selection but I did get Bad Girl, (Ain't Nobody Loves You) Like I Do, and Heart Don't Lie. Bad Girl and (Ain't Nobody Love Loves You) Like I Do. They are such good songs. So I had to buy one of La Toya's albums. So I bought "You're Gonna Get Rocked" from eBay and I heard the album and man was I shocked. The whole album was good. I liked every song. Here are the best songs. You're Gonna Get Rocked The other songs are just as great. Sure La Toya may not have the best singing voice in the world but look at people like Hilary Duff and Madonna. They can't really sing either. La Toya makes funky beats and good music that is easy to dance too. I can't wait to buy "Bad Girl" and I hear La Toya is coming out with a new album soon and I can't wait for it!!!

Loving La Toya,

I completely agree with the previous reviewer, who claims after listening to this album, you'll want to run out and get all of La Toya's albums. The only problem is, it is nearly impossible to find ANY of her albums. Even scanning through her catalog here, on Amazon, notice how many of them are "Out of Stock".La Toya's "underratedness" is why her albums are hard to find. She even has a new album called "Startin' Over". Actually, I use the term "new" loosely, since the album was recorded nearly 2 years ago, but distribution problems continue to delay its release. The last time I checked (about a week ago), even her record company (JaTail Records), which produced the new CD, has inaccurate information on their website regarding "Startin' Over", as they claim the CD will be released in the summer of 2003 (one year ago). La Toya was on Larry King in March 2003, discussing the soon-to-be-released CD; yet, here we are, almost a year and a half later, and the album has still not been released. Unfortunately, because she continues to remain in the huge sibling shadows of Michael and Janet, I doubt La Toya will ever truly receive the attention and credit that she deserves.

She should be overshadowed by Janet and Michael,

Okay I'll give her one star for trying but seriously, do you guys actually think she can sing? It sounds like she's trying too hard to sound like Janet. And someone thought that this album was better than Janet's Control album. LOL!!!!
