Book Description

October 2003
A guide for gifted kids who want to accelerate, home school or enter college early. Author, Lauren Betancourt skipped high school and entered college at age 13, graduating at age 16. This book details the process she took, the social questions and answers on entering college early, pros and cons, how to research laws and generally how to prepare to accelerate. SAT, CLEP and FAFSA information is included to help students learn how to get financial aid without a high school diploma. The book will appeal to k-12 parents and teachers. It also addresses one of the most difficult education questions: how to help gifted kids determine if acceleration is the right decision for them. A list of college programs that accept students to full-time college between the ages of 10 and 16+ is also included in an appendix along with a list of organizations that perform various services for the hundreds of kids that have entered college under the age of 16. Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Do kids that enter college before the age of 16 have social problems fitting into college life? Do they miss out on their childhood? What advantages and disadvantages are there for kids who accelerate? Exactly what process do you have to take to enter college at a young age? If I accelerate my child, what will people think? Is my child ready for acceleration? All these questions, and more, are answered in this book.

There are over 2 million families choosing alternative forms of education in the United States. "You’re gonna miss the prom?" provides a unique perspective on education. Although the book focuses on how to accelerate a student by entering college early, this book also provides answers to many of the questions that educators and parents may ask when trying to decide to grade skip or accelerate by subject. What can parents do to make it easier for their child to succeed in education?

Lauren Betancourt and her mother, Donna, offer advice on many types of schooling and provide a first hand account of the entire acceleration process, detailing their experiences and providing a practical and complete, step-by-step guide for the parents of gifted children.

From the Author

When I first entered college at age 13, I only knew about two other kids near my age who were attending full-time college. Three years later, after lots of research, I've found that hundreds of kids have entered college early and that I never heard of them because the news organizations that covered their stories only report regionally. It was a lot of work for my mom and I to research topics relevant to my early college situation and other normal college topics such as essay writing, financial aid, the college application process, and scholarship opportunities. I also wanted to know about, and contact, other accelerated kids. So, I decided to write "You're gonna miss the prom?" I chose that title because it's the first thing my best friend said to me when I told her I was skipping high school. I hope you enjoy the book. Good luck in your educational goals!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Gifted Kids and Their Parents, November 9, 2003

This review is from: You're Gonna Miss the Prom?: A True Life Account and Guide Book for Gifted Kids (Paperback)
Excellent! A very interesting story. The first two chapters of the book are about Lauren Betancourt who entered college at age thirteen. Chapter 2 gives details of her college years including what she took academically each semester and how she fit in socially. The other chapters really explain what you're up against if you decide to put a child ahead. Chapter 7 gives you tips on how to answer critical people who don't agree with your choice of schooling or people who think you're a pushy parent. There is a list of colleges that accept young children and a very helpful bibliography with a long list of research papers on gifted children. The most interesting part of the book was reading the questions and answers chapter where Lauren and her mother respond to the questions they've been asked over the years. This book covers everything from the younger years right up to college, SAT and financial aid. I liked the book and found it down to earth and easy to read.

This book was a wonderful story of success of a gifted child. This mother and daughter searched out and acted upon what was best for this gifted child and had the rewards of reaching their goal. The information included in the book will certainly help others who wish to reach similar goals in the future. I would highly recommend anyone to read this book.
