If You're Not Here, Please Raise Your Hand,
By A Customer
This review is from: If You're Not Here, Please Raise Your Hand: Poems About School (Aladdin Poetry) (Paperback)
This book, so acurately subtitled "Poems About School," is a hit with students and teachers alike. Ms Dakos takes everyday elementary school situations and problems, and -- through her poetry-- manages to pinpoint the goings on in every classroom in America using humor and sensitivity. The student with the messiest desk, the boy who cries at the drop of a hat, the new kid who hates math, the child who comes to class with more alibis than homework assignments, the children who just can't follow the rules, are all members of the class in Ms Dakos' first book, "If You're Not Here, Please Raise Your Hand-- Poems About School." This is truly a "class" anthology!

This wonderful book of elementary school life poems was a recommended summer reading for my 5th grader. I thank the one who recommended it. She loves it. I recommend it for all ages...I love it too and I'm a few decades past the 5th grade. Get this one for your child and he/she will thank you with their pleasure of the book and their reading to you.

Still my favorite books of poems!,
This review is from: If You're Not Here, Please Raise Your Hand: Poems About School (Aladdin Poetry) (Paperback)
I remember finding this gem in my Elementary School Library back in the 2nd grade. These are still my favorite poems of all time! I read every single one of them so many times that I still have most of them memorized, and I'm in college now! These are poems that young kids can relate to and have a lot of fun with. One of my favorite ones to act out was the Mighty Eye!! My friends and I would have giggle fits in the library giving each other... the Mighty Eye!!! Definitely one of the most fun books for kids, and it got me hooked on poetry for life! I even find reading Shakespeare to be fun, all because of my fond memories of this little book of poems. So if you want your son or daughter to never fear poetry again, start with this book and have tons of fun!

My 9 year old grandson loves the poems in this book. We read them to each other on the phone and always have a few laughs over the clever and memorable verses. A terrific way to introduce poetry to kids with meaningful settings and real-life connections to any young student. A wonderful bonus: it is mostly excellent writing.

Its so difficult to interest children in poetry nowadays. This book is your best chance because it offers poems with substance and insight that genuinely entertain as well.

I read a poem or two from this book each night at bed time to my 12 and 6 year old. Many of the poems are quite negative towards school. I prefer to teach my child that school is a good thing and so far they really love school. There is one poem that is very touching about a child's friend dying. Not really appropriate for the 6 year old but it's good to cover these topics as it is part of life.It is an OK book of poems, but I really wouldn't tell my friends to rush out and buy it. |
