5.0 out of 5 stars Laugh Out Loud Funny!
I received this book as a birthday present and had never heard of The Believer before (I guess it's a magazine) but recognized the names of various beloved comedians so I gave it a try and started reading it when I had some time to kill one Sunday afternoon. The result? I ended up blowing off a friend's birthday dinner because I couldn't (and didn't want to) put it down...

2.0 out of 5 stars Not so funny
I have a lot of respect for many of the people in this book and was surprised at how seldom I found it to be more than only slightly humorous. Maybe the set-up is flawed as someone else suggests, but whatever, I would highly recommend that you pick this up in a book store and read a few random pages before purchasing. Of course, at only $10 I don't feel too bad but...

1.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly Unfunny, October 6, 2010
This review is from: You're a Horrible Person, But I Like You: The Believer Book of Advice (Vintage Original) (Paperback)
I'm so glad I got this from the library, because it's just not funny, despite it's having some of the funniest people alive on its list of contributors. As other reviewers have noted, spend one minute reading random entries and you'll see just how bad it is.

3.0 out of 5 stars Some funny parts, July 9, 2011
This review is from: You're a Horrible Person, But I Like You: The Believer Book of Advice (Vintage Original) (Paperback)
I picked this one up from the library because I knew a lot of the authors, and they are all very funny people. It had promise to be a very hilarious read. This book had a few laugh out loud moments that I was sharing with my husband, but a lot of it just fell kinda flat. It was a quick read. I wasn't expecting it to be life-altering or anything, definitely knew it wasn't going to be true advice, but I did hope it would be a bit funnier than it was.

If you absolutely HAVE to read this book, go to a library. I laughed maybe 3 times, and 2 were during Harold Ramis' part. I forced myself to finish it because I hate leaving books unread and I thought it might get funnier, but it's really not. Unfortunately I bought "You're a Horrible Person, But I Like You" the day it came out so I didn't read any reviews, but I hope my review will save some people from wasted time/effort/money. So disappointed!

5.0 out of 5 stars Laugh Out Loud Funny!, December 13, 2011
This review is from: You're a Horrible Person, But I Like You: The Believer Book of Advice (Vintage Original) (Paperback)
I received this book as a birthday present and had never heard of The Believer before (I guess it's a magazine) but recognized the names of various beloved comedians so I gave it a try and started reading it when I had some time to kill one Sunday afternoon. The result? I ended up blowing off a friend's birthday dinner because I couldn't (and didn't want to) put it down. Seriously. It's addictively funny.

The advice given to half-joking demented streams of consciousness wrapped up in open ended questions is exactly the kind of twisted stuff we think in our heads but never dare to admit to thinking. And the result is f-ing hilarious.

Let me close with this: Rob Corddry, Ed Helms, Mindy Kaling, Aziz Ansari, Fred Armison, Jim Gaffigan, Samantha Bee, Zach Galifianakis, Janeane Garofalo, Amy Sedaris, Michael Showalter and Sarah Silverman - just to name a few. Nothing can ever go wrong with such an all-star roster of comedic geniuses.

A must read!

I absolutely loved this book. Mindy Kaling is hilarious and so are most of the other people. Highly recommended--I've passed it along to friends!

4.0 out of 5 stars Who Are These People?!, April 14, 2010
This review is from: You're a Horrible Person, But I Like You: The Believer Book of Advice (Vintage Original) (Paperback)
If I thought any of the folks who asked these questions were even remotely serious, (or in some cases real) I think I'd spend the rest of my life looking over my shoulder. Perhaps my favorite moment involves the dog owner who wants to mimic his pug in eating his own poop, but they're all good. Incidentally, if Harold Ramis's anecdote involving pigweed doesn't tickle your funny bone, you clearly don't like to laugh.

Hillarious book. I am not a fan of all the comics involved, but the ones I do enjoy make this book well worth it.

Every contributor to this book is hilarious--but you must already know that. The sense of humor varies widely throughout, but everything is on point. So rarely does a collection like this (well conceived, beautifully put together) come about. This is a must-buy for any person, horrible or not, in need of some tongue-in-cheek advice.
