Eric Kaz started off in the late 60’s with the Blues Magoos. Atlantic Records signed him to do a couple of solo albums: ‘If You’re Lonely (1972)” and “Cul De Sac (1973):”, both out of print and very hard to find used in stores. Several tracks from ‘If You’re Lonely’ were covered by such famous artists as Willie Nelson, Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt. As a matter of fact, Kaz has never been known for his own release, but rather, what other artists have done with his songs. Two of his biggest songs: ‘Love Has No Pride’

It’s impossible to separate Eric Kaz, and his musical partner of the 70’s: Craig Fuller- a great songwriter vocalist that paired with Kaz on American Flyer – a sort of folk country rock band in the vein of Fuller’s previous band: Pure Prairie League. Most of the tracks on “if You’re Lonely’ are soft-country rock songs, considered to be Adult Contemporary music. While some soft-rock is syrupy sweet, these have a distinctly unique flavor that sort of reminds me of early Billy Joel, before his music became totally pop.

Perhaps the centerpiece of this album is the tremendous single for Bonnie Raitt that came from this LP: ‘Cry Like a Rainstorm’ which also made an appearance on the Fuller-Kaz album that followed 3 years later (highly recommended.) The focus of Kaz’s music is upon his lyrics and melody, which is never overshadowed by heavy guitars or instrumentation. Still performing to this day all over the world, Kaz is a tremendously underrated songwriter that has won multiple music awards for his work.

“If You’re Lonely” is a slice of time: the early 70’s when country-rock-folk blended into a new form of music that countered the guitar-based rock at the time. Harmonies, moderately slow tempo, and excellent songwriting were the keys to Kaz’s success, and 40 years later it still rings with a heartfelt delivery that is not out of date.
