Editorial Reviews

Review

"This book is going to change the way golf is taught." -- Coach Conrad Rehling, Golf Magazine Top 100 Teacher, Golf coach to Jerry Pate, Bob Murphy, and Steve Lowery

"This book should have been written a long time ago. It would have saved golfers from a lot of needless frustration, and the people who quit would still be playing. This book hits the nail on the head. It is a MUST read." --Craig Shankland, 4-time NFPGA Teacher of the year and Golf Magazine Top 100 Teacher

About the Author

Charlie King grew up in the East Tennessee town of Decatur. He was bitten by the golf bug while a student at Tennessee Technological University. After graduating with a B.S. in Marketing in 1987, he pursued his dream of being a player in Orlando, Florida. He searched for a teacher who would help him reach his potential, but was unsuccessful the first few years. Charlie quickly learned his passion was not limited to playing, but that he found a similar enjoyment in teaching others to maximize their potential. His difficulty in finding a teacher for his own game during this period inspired him to write an understandable book that would enable other golfers to avoid these same pitfalls and identify a competent professional.

Charlie began his career in1988 as an assistant professional and then as a teaching professional with Swing's the Thing Golf Schools at Orange Lake Country Club. Since 1992, he has taught at The Golf Academy of the South. He takes great pride in helping the current students and graduates achieve their own dreams in the golf industry. He has served as the Education Chairman for the East Central Chapter of the NFPGA since 1995 and was the recipient of the Horton Smith Award from his chapter and section of the PGA for his contributions to education.

This book marks the beginning of Charlie's efforts to see fundamental change in the way golfers approach learning golf. He believes that more people could enjoy this game of all games more fully if they only knew how. In establishing his company, Uncommon Golf, he is taking his passion for seeing improvement in his students' games to a higher level with the book, an internet site and a newsletter.

He lives in Orlando, Florida, with his wife, Julie, and daughter, Kathryn.

4.0 out of 5 stars Maybe there's hope yet!, March 14, 2001
This review is from: You're NOT Lifting Your Head (Paperback)
In this simply written tale of the golf woes of J.B., Charlie King gives us a largely self-taught golfer whose handicap has remained the same for more than ten years. Although his frustration has recently increased, he has been reluctant to take lessons from a pro, having previously had a bad experience with one who tried to change too many things too fast and "ruined his game." Now, ready to give up the game completely, he finally finds the perfect teacher--and the reader is able to go along and share his lessons and, presumably, apply some of the same helpful principles to his or her own game.

If you have ever had someone tell you that "you lifted your head" when you've stubbed the ball and/or left all your weight on your back foot and failed to follow through, this is the book for you. Harry Wilkinson, the pro in this book, says he has videotaped hundreds of golfers, and not one of them has actually lifted his head at the time the club face contacts the ball. It is other parts of the swing (sometimes a "reverse pivot," for example) that need to be corrected--and when they are, you'll never have to think about your head again.

With relatively simple explanations and a few (unfortunately, too few!) drawings to illustrate the basic principles of driving, pitching, chipping, and putting, King aims to correct the many misconceptions about how the golf swing works, reducing it to its most basic elements and explaining why mistakes occur and how to correct them. He addresses the everyday concerns of the weekend golfer and provides the important learning tools which can make a good golf swing more accessible and help lessons to "take." Whether you are a 35-handicap beginner reading about the golf swing for the first time or a 3-handicap expert who just needs a tune-up, you'll find much to enjoy--and apply--in this short book. 5.0 out of 5 stars Lively, fun, informative, and highly recommended., May 4, 2000
This review is from: You're NOT Lifting Your Head (Paperback)
Golf expert Charlie King draws upon his years of experience and uses the unique approach of a fictional account of one golfer's journey to refute several golf instruction myths and promote the importance of each golfer finding his or her coach. As with learning any other athletic or creative skills, the first step is to find a teacher or mentor that is right for you -- and no where is this truer than in learning how to play the game of golf. You're Not Lifting Your Head is a lively, fun, informative, and highly recommended book for any golfer who has ever been told to "keep your head down", who chronically slices the ball, mis-hits the ball without knowing why, or is thinking of quitting the game in frustration.

As a fellow PGA Member, and dedicated instructor, this book is of one my all time favorites. Having a chance to meet Charlie at the PGA Merchandise show in 2012, I can tell you this book describes his dedication and drive to teach people this wonderful game. There are thousands of PGA preofessional who care just as much as Charlie. Golf is a wonderful frustrating game. Follow his guidelines on how to find an instructor and begin your journey. You will not regret it. Best wishes to every fellow golfer in your journey!!!! Enjoy the process
