Book Description

July 1, 2010
Meet Ashley who watches, dissects, analyzes, synthesizes and then creates amazing poetry. Meet Aaron who arrives to his English class on time, but leaves out if it gets too quiet. Meet Saraii who expects an Obama presidency to open Americans' eyes to the fact that racism still exists. And meet Duane who wonders whether the criminal justice system is actually a business profiting from systemic discrimination against poor, minority youth. You're Not Listening is a compilation of narratives recorded by Baltimore, Maryland high school students about their experiences, perceptions, and opinions on a range of topics: family, school, sex, identity, racism, politics, and crime. They chose the title You're Not Listening to express concern that adults don't listen closely enough to their voices. Indeed, their narratives offer important lessons to teachers, parents, and public officials who interact with urban youth on a regular basis and challenge readers to reexamine the predispositions and stereotypes they may hold about cities and city kids.

Had to buy this book--my niece is one of the editors! But more than this, it gives an accurate perception of disadvantaged and often dismissed youth in an inner city. Fortunate are these young people whose teachers encouraged them to express their worldview. A poignant book.

This review is from: You're Not Listening: Baltimore Youth Speak Out (Paperback)

"Far too often programs, education, policy, courts and families are structured without the voices of youth being heard. `You're Not Listening': Baltimore Youth Speak Out gives a listening, caring ear from adults that took the time to help all of us hear. It shows us why youth should always be considered and at the table when processes that concern them are being created. Job well done Stone and Hartzler-Miller; a must read for anyone involved with or working with youth."
Nzinga Oneferua-El, DM, MHS
Founder and Executive Director of Safe Healing Foundation

`You're Not Listening': Baltimore Youth Speak Out should be required reading for teachers, parents, and policymakers having anything to do with young people in schools. Overwhelmingly respectful of their students' voices, Stone and Hartzler-Miller have compiled a thesaurus of urban adolescent thoughts - the most vibrant, powerful, and necessary thoughts in the nation today.
Jay Gillen, Ph.D.
Baltimore City Schools and the Baltimore Algebra Project
