3.0 out of 5 stars Insightful lyrical content
The lyrics of YOU'RE THE ONLY ONE are what really caught my attention on good old MTV. Both hilarious yet serious all within its short span, Maria sings about her lover, who she knows is all too great. The thing is, he hasn't figured it out yet.

I hope you can forgive me for that time
When I put my hand between your legs
And said it was small
Cuz it's...

I admit, the first time I heard Maria Mena's "You're The Only One" I didn't know quite what to make of it. The song is so unconventional in how she literally speaks the words (although she does sing during the chorus). And yet there was something special about this song which caused me to give it a few more listens. After all, many things cannot be judged right away and require time to fully understand. Well now this song has become stuck in my head and I love it. I still find it unique, but in a great way. It's refreshing to see an artist like Maria who has her own style and doesn't just put out manufactured, stale music for the masses. She is a true talent, in her own quirky way. And I find her voice to have a certain smoothness to it that gives "You're The Only One" a distinct characteristic.

But the real gem of this single is the non-album track "Patience." WOW, what a great song. Beautiful, just beautiful. Maria's singing is more "conventional" on this song, and everything about it works perfectly. I can't believe this song didn't make it on her album.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a style!, June 28, 2004

I have to admit that when I first heard Maria Mena's song "You're the Only One" I was skeptical about her style, and her lyrics. But I found myself humming the tune, and soon buying the song off of iTunes. It's an interesting song, and is almost telling you a story. If you listen to the words, you realize how well Maria relates to young love. It may be more for the teenage ears, but even adults need to remember what love felt like in their youth. The chorus is one that will stay in your head, and soon you will find yourself singing the words, "You're the only one who drags me kicking and screaming through fast dreams."

5.0 out of 5 stars Norwegian Pop is some of the Best Around..., June 22, 2004
"You're the Only One" marks Maria Mena's "big" [American] debut, hitting the Billboard Charts upon its release. And I wholeheartedly believe the song, and the singer, deserve to be there. Now, some people may say she doesn't sing, only talks, but --- that is in this one song. And that is what makes the song. The little, quirky talking has a flirtatious tone; she's telling a story, it's cute, and quite enjoyable. Her voice is different --- fragile and somewhat airy, yet she means every word she sings. I'm expecting great things from her CD, and I can't wait to see where she goes. Definitely check this single out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Fresh Song!, June 17, 2004

I love "You're the Only One." It's a fun little slice of pop by Norweigen pop star Maria Mena. It's mostly spoken except for an extremely catchy chorus. Her voice may not be the best *very thin and weak* but I do like the vibe she brings to her music. Also included is a B-side.

Cuz it's really not at all
I guess there's just a part of me that likes to bring you down
Just to keep you around
Cuz the day you realize how amazing you are
You're gonna leave me

The thing is, her singing isn't the best. I don't strictly show devotion to those who can belt it out like Christina and Beyonce. Norah Jones has a mellower, more soothing voice. But throughout YOU'RE THE ONLY ONE, Maria basically speaks rather than sings, for the most part. I heard that this is the style of Norwegian pop you'll find back where she lives - she's a native who has learned to speak okay English, judging by her MTV YOU HEAR IT FIRST interview.

I'd call Maria a cross between Bob Dylan and Alanis Morisette - an interesting combination. Her lyrics are humorous, often insightful, making this beat indeed a catchy one. This first effort is both short and sweet, plus it illustrates an all too common fear in many of today's relationships.

The music is different - her voice is different and her lyrics are fun and catchy - I highly suggest a listen - you might just like the whole album. Certainly an unusual thing to hear now a days.

Sure she prolly isnt America's Idol, but Maria Mena is like the breed of artists that amaze you with lyrics. Besides, her tune is catchy, and she is almost like the second coming of Alanis Morissette.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stop whining, please., June 24, 2004

Alot of people seem to be seething about how Maria doesn't "sing" or that her singing sucks. Her native language is NOT English, and her native language is very nasal and bronchial intensive. She does sing, just not in the overdone style like Britney Spears or the rest. She belts out every word meaning what she is singing, the songs are very heartfelt, and her attitude is one to match them. As far her not really "singing" and just "talking" the words, this is nothing new if you're into music at all. Alot of artists omit singing, or even music for that part. Bobby McFerrin's "Don't worry, be happy." had ONE instrument, and that was a bongo, the rest was some cheesy lyrics and some whistling, along with a slapstick video starring Robin Williams, but that was still more than enough to create a hit single. Maria Mena is a talented artist, she just doesn't get the credit she deserves.

A Kid's Review
warning. do not buy this single, or her new cd because it will probably suck. her 1st single is mostly talked and not really sung, basically this stupid girl talking to her boyfriend. really dumb song, worse video, this is the kind of music you should listen to if youre in the mood for being irritated by mainstream crap at its finest. cheers!
