Book Description

October 25, 2006
The science of growing young (neoteny) underpins this book about maintaining or rediscovering ten youthful traits in ourselves as we age. The traits are resilience, optimism, wonder, curiosity, joy, humor, musicality (song and dance), work, play, and learning. Across all, there is love. The reader is encouraged to keep a Young Twice Chronicle for recording thoughts and outcomes as the book suggests do-overs and other activities for growing young-from the inside out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Putting it into perspective, January 15, 2007
By
Ron (CUPERTINO, CA, United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: You're Only Young Twice: 10 Do-Overs to Reawaken Your Spirit (Paperback)
As I was headed into my fifties, I was feeling a bit of disconnect between how I was feeling about myself and how a `fifty year old should act.' While I feel quite youthful, the mirror now shows me that the reality is different, Ronda's book helped me to put my own age and mortality into a different perspective.

As noted in her book by one of her many scientific resources, Mihaly Csikezentmihalya states that "negative, unproductive or harmful memes" (an imprint of sorts) "about growing older, we harm not only ourselves; we harm the potential development of future generation." In essence, our attitudes not only have a direct impact about how we are `being' in the world, it further impacts our children (via imprints). I want my children to know that they can lead a vital and full life throughout.

While this book has a basis of research supporting Ronda's assertions, it is not a research text. It is a well-written discussion of the possibilities that aging can bring to a person. This book also looks at the social stigmas of aging and examines other promising contexts from which to operate. Given the current state of our society's beliefs and assumptions about getting older, I refuse to adopt the typical negative image of someone moving forward in life.

Ronda ... Thanks for your work on this book. By the way, I am buying a banjo because, yes, I always wanted to give this a try. Your book has inspired me to try several other things that I'll be working on over the next many years. We are forever young.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Aging, November 18, 2006
This review is from: You're Only Young Twice: 10 Do-Overs to Reawaken Your Spirit (Paperback)
Have you ever asked yourself, "Where's the instruction book on aging?" Well, ask no more; it has been written, and the name of the book is You're Only Young Twice.

This book is written in a unique style, using humor and thought-provoking quotes. An added bonus includes gentle suggestions for bringing forth creativity and journaling. The tone of Ronda Beaman's writing is soothing and very well written. She is a role model for aging youthfully, while doing so with fun, a zest for life, and living in the moment while retaining memories and useful skills from youth.

You're Only Young Twice is a great read for people of all ages. It is the simplicity of the concept of embracing your golden years with wit, wonder and amazement, as well as dignity and love of self and humanity, that makes the writing so engaging and brilliant.
