One day, about two years ago, Bud Gaugh, the drummer for Sublime, one of the most beloved and commercially successful rock bands of the ’90s, received a call from Eric Wilson, Sublime’s bassist and Gaugh’s long-time but somewhat estranged friend. Wilson said he had been working with a kid he thought Gaugh should meet — a 20-year-old singer and guitarist named Rome ... Read more in Amazon's Sublime With Rome Store

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty damn good considering the long layover July 12, 2011
Format:Audio CD
I probably own every Sublime song ever made, including bootlegs, and I find this album refreshing and Rome is a very proficient addition to the group, although he is no Bradley Nowell, but it's probably the best white-guy reggae besides original Sublime, Dirty Heads, and Matisyahu. I got the album around July 8 or so, and I found most of the songs to be very good and I especially like Panic, Lover's Rock, Murdera, Take it or Leave It, You Better Listen, and Can You Feel It? I also enjoyed their two punk-sounding songs, My World and Paper Cuts. It may seem a bit "lite" to some, a little fluffy, but it's still really good music. It does sound a bit more glossy than the music Sublime put on 15 years ago, and if you compare this to Sublime's albums, you'll see this music may not have as much passion or drive, but the laid-back voice of Rome is very soothing and I can definitely see a bright future for this "new" band. It is certainly around the level of LBDA, but maybe a little lower. The bonus tracks are great, too. Overall an album that rivals Sublime, but may just come up a little short. But it is still really good music, and it is definitely worth giving a listen. I've already listened to it at least 10 times and it is a great album, on par with what you would have expected and maybe a little more. Enjoy!

Edit: After a few years, I realize that while the music hasn't changed, Rome certainly has. He's become a bubble gum pop creator solo artist, at least on the side. Bud's left the band due to musical and ethical differences. It was a nice idea to reform the band, but without Bradley it will never measure up. There's no edge, and without edge you might as well go join N Sync or the Backstreet Boys, Rome. While he has talent in his voice, he needs work on writing songs and composing them. Here's hoping SwR's next album is better and more varied.

4.0 out of 5 stars They picked the right guy. July 12, 2011
Format:Audio CD
There is no replacing Bradley...but this kid Rome is solid. It's nice to hear Bud and Eric playing the style they love again. LBDA was good but it was not this. Very catchy hooks and melodies though the whole album. There is a lot of "singing to his girl" lyrics but don't let that detour you. Rome can shred, sing and write. That's a shot in the arm for the old school reggae punks from Long Beach.

5.0 out of 5 stars Listen to what I have to say August 5, 2011
Format:Audio CD
I am by far the biggest Sublime fan I know.I have the same tattoo as Bradley across my shoulders to back it up. No one is ever going to be Bradley F@#$ing Nowell the genius that he was. Rome realizes this. He pays tribute to but does not try to be him. One example is he will never play "Caress me down" the song that has the lyric "me llamo Bradley". If you look in the liner notes for the album you will see that Rome idolizes Bud and Eric and for the fact they taught him to be honest with his music. He was probably eight or so when Bradley died RIP. So he is talking about his experiences while keeping the music "Sublime". Bud and Eric have every right to go out and play Sublime and put out this record. I have seen Badfish the Sublime cover band at least 10 times (check out Scotty Dont their original music if you like Sublime) because thats the only way I could go see great musicians play Sublime and rock the house. Even Badfish's t shirts said "Keep Sublime Alive" and that's what we all have been doing, isnt it? If Badfish can tour nationwide constantly of course Bud and Eric our going think - hey that's our music that should be us rocking out because we helped write and record it. That said this is a great album, it truly is. Rome was the guy to do it no questions asked. If they had came out with either of the LDBA albums and called it sublime... NO F'N WAY. This kid Rome has soul and talent and is the only one who could pull it off. Is it Bradley... no. Is it a great album? Yes it is.Get the deluxe edition. From Panic to Safe and Sound it frickin rocks. Nuff' said. Have a great life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Album, Not Sublime July 17, 2011
By Jose
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
This is by far not a Sublime album. I bought this album the day it dropped. I love it. Every song is well written, and the music is enjoyable. Very entertaining. With that said, it should not be called "Sublime with Rome". It should be more like "Rome featuring members of Sublime". I was and still am a die hard Sublime fan. I own every single album, bootleg, live show... You name it and I've got it. I waited for years to hear something new from Sublime. When I heard this album was dropping, I saw light at the end of the tunnel. But like I said this is not a "Sublime" album. Rome is great. He's a great songwriter, and great singer. But his lyrics are not anything like Bradley Nowells lyrics. In Brads lyrics about drug addiction, his dog, rockstar life, or just living in california, I found release. In Romes lyrics, i found a kid singing songs about girls, and smoking pot. Close but no Cigar. Bradley and the guys tried forever to achieve what they did. I feel like Rome just kind of stepped in and reaped the benefits of Brads hard work. I do enjoy this album, But nothing about it says sublime. The real sublime is gone but not forgotten. I recommend this album for every one, but dont expect anything remotely "Sublime".

4.0 out of 5 stars Had my doubts, but it's great. July 13, 2011

Huge Sublime fan here. I heard about this album a long time ago and said "Noooo!"

But, I'll eat my words. I love it. If anything, it's a great tribute to the Sublime of my youth. I can't stop listening to it. This Rome guy's voice is very soothing and all the songs are catchy.
