4.0 out of 5 stars Good buy for beginners.
This is a great book for all who wants to learn about networking. This books shows with a easy language all the essencial part of networks, like cabling, topologies, protocols and more. This book is said to help your own studies to the MCSE certification, but it goes far beyond: anyone who wants to learn about networking can easily read this book.

Besides being riddled with errors, the sample questions were generally not meaningful. It is, however, easy reading and does have the necessary information. 2.0 out of 5 stars Not Worth The Money - Buy Any Book But This One, June 5, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Sams' Teach Yourself MCSE Networking Essentials in 14 Days (Covers Exam #70-058) (Paperback)
Nothing like the NT Workstation version. NE is poorly written and has so many errors in the practice tests as to render the book worthless. As an example, the authors ask the same question in the same chapter but give two different answers. Use brain dumps and cram sessions to review for your exam, NOT THIS BOOK.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Book, Needs to be suplemented though, January 9, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Sams' Teach Yourself MCSE Networking Essentials in 14 Days (Covers Exam #70-058) (Paperback)
I used this book and The Sybex Networking Essentials book to study for the exam. I found that this book had most of the material and it was presented really well. I would say that the lack of a CD with testing questions or any type of sample test hurts the book Sample tests are really useful in my opinion. If you use this with a bigger book (like Sybex's) I think you will do fine. Although I had little or no experience, a more experienced person may find that this all they need. I passed on my first try with a 608.

2.0 out of 5 stars Decent content, poorly written, frustrating errors, December 30, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Sams' Teach Yourself MCSE Networking Essentials in 14 Days (Covers Exam #70-058) (Paperback)
I feel that the content of this book is adequate for passing the exam, however it seems as if this book was put together in a rush. The answers in the back of the book frequently do not correspond to the questions being asked. I was dissapointed by a couple of technical flaws. In section 14.4.2 for example, the author states that if you know that the voltage in a cable is 50 ohms, the cable is unbroken... This is not true, Voltage and Resistance are different and cannot be referred to as the same. I may have misunderstood the statement, but a good writer doesn't leave the reader confused.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good overview, but....., August 21, 1998
This review is from: Sams' Teach Yourself MCSE Networking Essentials in 14 Days (Covers Exam #70-058) (Paperback)
This book is not as good as the other ones in the series, particularly the ones by Marcus Burton. The sample questions are largely useless, with them beating to death the layers of the OSI model. They spent too much time on the flavours of FDDI for the likely number of questions on the exam.

The editing and quality control on this book are decidedly below average. For instance page 116 has test tips for Windows 95 just kind of dropped in the middle of a discussion of architecture.

I used this book along with the Networking Essentials Exam Guide from QUE, and expect to pass the exam with no problem, (but I have a LOT of experience). This should not be your only prep material for this exam.

3.0 out of 5 stars BOTTOM LINE: Good content, but too many technical errors!, April 15, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Sams' Teach Yourself MCSE Networking Essentials in 14 Days (Covers Exam #70-058) (Paperback)
This book is riddled with technical errors, particularly in the sample questions at the end of each chapter. I don't know how this one got through editing - somebody was sleeping. I did pass the test using this book as my only reference material, but I also have a lot of experience. I would NOT recommend this book as the only reference source for the exam, it is not comprehensive enough and there are too many errors.

4.0 out of 5 stars VERY GOOD BOOK, April 13, 1998
By
This review is from: Sams' Teach Yourself MCSE Networking Essentials in 14 Days (Covers Exam #70-058) (Paperback)
A very good book for people trying to prepare for Networking essentials exam. Needs more work on questions and routing/bridging/gateway part, but if you can get your hands on good exam questions you will be OK. Only used this book and a sample questions and passed the exam on the first try.
