Editorial Reviews

Youssou N’Dour is one of the true superstars of African music. A native of Dakar in Senegal he has been singing and performing since his childhood. He has performed with many leading western artists including Paul Simon, Neneh Cherry and Branford Marsalis but is perhaps best known for his association with Peter Gabriel. He was one of the stars of the 1988 Amnesty Tour and appeared at the recent Live 8 concerts in Hyde Park, the Eden Project, Paris and Edinburgh – three of them on the same day!

This concert from 1989 features Youssou N’Dour with his band Le Super Etoile de Dakar and was the first of four appearances he has made at the Montreux festival to date. N’Dour’s voice is as fine as ever and the show is a showcase for the color, emotion and energy so characteristic of his performances.

Superb concert, well filmed, lots of close-ups. Not quite enough of Bireli, but that was the show, absolutely superb. Good length at 91 mins, shows how acoustic guitar can be more exciting than electric, even for rock fans. Buy it, you won't be disappointed.

Oh, Gosh! This rocks! The songs performed are predominately from "The Lion", "Set", and "Immigres". A couple youth perform with the band with natural precision. There are two female vocalists, too. They are never seriously affected when feedback and some electrical buzzing occurs onstage. Instead, as on "The Truth", they just jam through it. Youssou fans and all African music listeners should get this. Don't hestitate; life is slipping by.

I own the other dvd by the Super Guitar Trio with the same line up. I am not sure but believe it was recorded at Nightstage in Boston. This Montreux release is better. I'm gonna take some heat for saying this but I think Bireli blows away the other players. Dimeola is no doubt incredble, and has amazing right hand power and precision. He is great at the muted runs and has an intense articulation when he plays. However, Dimeola uses reverb effects to dramatize his perfomance when Bireli uses nothing. Bireli doesnt read and it's wild to see the other two players site- reading on a difficult piece when Bireli does it by ear and memory. I am curious as to why, or if there is any particular decision-making dynamics in why Dimeola is in the middle always, and why is guitar is clearly louder? Dont get me wrong I love Dimeola, but I just believe Bireli is more creative and just way less predictible. Coryell is good but his strenght is not speed, it's in his melodies. You cant go wrong buying this DVD..IT COOKS. BUY the Bireli "Paris" DVD and see this guy play mind-blowing electric as well as bass! He was friends with Jaco and a huge fan...Bireli is a great bass player too! Bireli lagrene is one of the top players in the world today in both the jazz and gypsie genres.
