Soccer has boomed among young people in the last generation, but to a considerable extent understanding and appreciation of the sport--which is at once simple and intricate--has eluded adults. Here, at last, is a primer which, its title notwithstanding, will serve not only parents who coach but any whose children are involved in the sport. Most of the basics are covered (although team type drills are slighted), and the author brings practical experience to his work. Some of the terminology is slightly outdated (e.g., halfbacks are now normally called midfielders), but the book will serve the newcomer to the sport well. Recommended for any novice who has children playing. McCarthy is also the author of A Parent's Guide to Coaching Baseball (LJ 1/1/90).
