Book Description

January 28, 2009

We all know that the definition for success in the corporate world is fairly straightforward. To be considered great, companies first need to turn a profit. For organizations in the social sector, however, the challenge is much bigger. To be truly effective, they must stay relevant and, above all, stay true to their mission. For the past thirty-five years, Cass Wheeler has ensured that the American Heart Association has fulfilled its calling to save lives and educate the public about heart disease by adopting some of the same strategies used in the for-profit sector.

In "You've Gotta Have Heart, " he shows people at all levels of a nonprofit how to make sure their hard work really pays off. Using examples of some of the American Heart Association and others, Wheeler reveals the leadership skills that will help employees, volunteers, and board members excel at their jobs, become good role models, and build a more visionary, creative, and disciplined nonprofit organization. Readers will discover:

why a mission statement is not the same as a sense of mission - the characteristics of successful nonprofit leaders - how to combine the nonprofit mission with the management lessons of the business world - how to define an organization's core values and business model

Filled with honest, practical, and thoughtful lessons from the author's own experience, this book will ensure that nonprofits of every size continue to do great and be great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Guidance from a Proven Non-Profit Leader February 10, 2009
Format:Hardcover
Cass Wheeler has encapsulated years of experience and know-how into "required reading" for every non-profit leader. The knowledge and approaches Cass reveals in his book can help transform good organizations to better ones and elevate the better non-profits to the ranks of the very best. This book should be a well-worn, dog-eared, highlighted text on the desk of every leader in the non-profit sector.

Former CFO of the American Heart Association

5.0 out of 5 stars Pragmatic Advice - from the heart February 3, 2009
Format:Hardcover
Cass Wheeler eloquently delivers a much-needed message to the social sector - delivered with heart and pragmatism. 40 years as a CEO of national non-profit organizations taught me the same lessons....but I would have benefited from this book early in my career. Great wisdom and advice from an equally great leader in the non-profit sector. Articulate and well-written.

Past President & CEO, American Association of Museums

5.0 out of 5 stars You've Gotta Have Heart -- has heart March 15, 2009
Format:Hardcover
This book is a common sense handbook for anyone working to create real social change, and its a wonderful refresher for those who have been working in the nonprofit field for years. The way Cass Wheeler combines a business savy with the "heart" that drives nonprofit work is what makes this book so valuable. Its the kind of book nonprofit managers will take from their shelf again and again.
