I don't know how I missed this one in 2006. I haven't been too interested in hip hop lately, that is until i got this. I loved the stuff by APC, and Sage Francis always impressed. Clouddead's first release, as well as some stuff by Bleubird blew me away. Those guys were all taking things forward, to the next level. But unlike all those artists, Spank Rock, despite the seriously sick skills, should not be taken as seriously as those artists.
Anyhow, while falling asleep to Jimmy Kimmel one night, these guys took the stage towards the end of the program and made me jump out of my seat. By luck, this was at the local cd shop for a real nice price the next day, so i grabbed it. Honestly, the lyrics are a little juvenile for my liking, but again, I'd be foolish to take this too seriously. From the opening beats of "Backyard Betty" on to the very end, this lp doesn't let up for a second. It's a short sharp trip through some of the sweetest beats and rhymes I've heard in a long time. The minimal lo-fi style reminds me of some of Grand Buffet's best stuff, though a little better produced perhaps. Also, there are hints of UK garage and some excellent, nasty, spacey sounds going on throughout. I can see the indie crowd digging this much more than the generally narrow-minded hip-hop status quo, which is too bad, 'cause this stuff is truly fresh sounding--where hip hop should be right about now. I'm glad I took a chance on this one and look forward to more from Spank Rock and co. I give it a five for originality in a hip hop world gone stale.

Very Good Album,

I would highly recommend this album to anyone who likes Diplo's production and mixes. MC Spank Rock raps about the same things as Pharrel, but can actually rap. The beats remind me of Coldcut or Meat Beat Manifesto.

No joke, this hit me outta the blue. A hip hop record that has a great rebellious energy and a refreshing escape from the pampered and decadant styles so prevalent right now in the rap game.
Spank Rock is hungry! Not to be slept on, people.

genius.,

I read that someone reviewed the lyrics as immature. Let me correct that by saying that it's overly misogynistic. Like over the top. And because it one-ups the likes of Little Jon, think on the level of 2livecrew and dj assault, AND the fact that each song is really smart ("Rick Rubin" is a great example of how smart the lyrics are), Spank Rock becomes straight genius.
The production is out of this world! The Baltimore club influence is strong, but with a funk and edge all its own. This album is in my top 5 all time, namely because it took me by surprise. Even those who don't generally like hiphop can appreciate this new genre that Spank Rock is creating, a electro-indie-rap-mash up. You could say that a fan of Girl Talk could easily transition to Spank Rock. Then maybe move on to Plastic Little.

Spank Rock - YoYoYoYoYo FIVE STARS!,
This review is from: Yoyoyoyoyo (Audio CD)
Spank Rock can rap and has incorporated some of the most amazing Breaks and Hip Hop beats together with a little UK Garage sound. It is the album I have been looking for. If you are all tired out of all the mainstream Hip Hop and Rap out right now, BUY THIS ALBUM!!!

Spank Rock sound nothing like, nor are they trying to sound anything like BEP. If you want cheesy, teeny bopper, RnB "hip hop" then BEP are for you. If however you want some fresh, electro inspired goodness, look no further than spank rock. If you've not heard them before & you want an idea of they're style, they've previously toured with Hollertronix & M.I.A. and also had some guest production from Diplo. All in all this is a veritable melting pot of styles that provides a nice break from the endless stream of generic drivel that seems to be taking up the airwaves at present. Check it out...

Just Try to Keep Your Feet Still,

Ok, like, this is really engaging music. Ok. But please, please, don't ride up to the elementary school with your two young kids to drop off your 5 year old to Kindergarten in the morning with the window rolled down and Spank Rock blasting through your Bose's wearing a big 'ole gold chain with a Dollar sign pendant with diamond studs throughout it. Take if from me, your kid's school principal as well as the other parents won't appreciate it all that much and they just might serve you up with a restraining order and make you have to drop your kid off like 5 blocks away or at least out of earshot from your car stereo. Look at it this way, its the way I'm trying to get my 5 year old to look at it, the extra exercise from the walking will do him some good and if it comes down to it...just give him some headphones with Spank Rock loaded up on his little Itunes so he'll be head bopping and body popping all the way to K-garten, boy! Spank Rock is that good to launch him to coolest kid in school status but be warned, lyrically we are talking like the 2Live Crew teritorry. The words are kinda nasty is alls I'm trying to say.
All the music is way catchy. Think of it like a mash up of M.I.A. (without all the political-charged lyricism) and the nastiest house hip hoppers around and you have something close to Spank Rock. The bass will serve you well here. It's off the charts boi!! Tracks like track 6, "Bump," lands you squarely in Gorillaz teritorry. But whereas the Gorillaz are arty and the lyrics are intelligent with Spank Rock you don't have to think, shut that mind off, and groove my friend. Get the bootie shakin' boi!!! There's no way you can't dance to this. You'll jump up right outta your chair, like I'm doing now, and impersonate Tom Cruise in Tropic Thunder. It's that good, boi!!! At about the 3 minute point in track 6, there's a female rapper featured. Who really knows who she is but she's darned good, boi!!! She takes over like Lil' Kim or Missy and brings down the house, boi! It's a album highlight but don't take my word for it, listen to it your danged self! But hail my words homey, if you are adverse to language of the gutter variety, stay away from this. K, Moms and Pops? Peace out. ...mmw

I knew I would be biased from the get go since I know Naeem aka Spank Rock, but I must say that the album is truely impressive. Their style is definitely original and fills a gap of what the music scene is missing. Just listening to their music makes you want to party like a rock star.

It's like somebody put some Lil Jon on the stove and just left it there simmerin and simmerin. When they caught it, only the essence was left --this is it. The product is like just a bunch of neutrons and string theory an all that plus some extra funk in there. Spank will be on Da Muthaship. No question about that. Now he can just relax. You should get this record and do the same.
