5.0 out of 5 stars A real surprise and a real treat, February 8, 2011
This review is from: Yrjö Kilpinen: Kanteletar (Audio CD)
Yrjö Kilpinen (1892-1959) wrote some 790 songs and was both very popular and very influential in Finland in his time. His popularity suffered after World War II, however, mostly due to his association with the German regime and partially because of the (perceived) conservativeness of his musical idiom. Still, his songs - at least on the evidence here - constitute a remarkable body of music. On first listening they strike some listeners as somewhat inconsequential, but repeated listening will surely bring out their qualities. They are variegated (though Kilpinen's personal style shines through consistently), atmospheric and beautiful, often completely mesmerizing.

There is an appealing simplicity to Kilpinen's songs, as well as a rather straightforward tunefulness. The harmonies are generally simple as well, folk-music based (some of them may actually sound surprisingly exotic to non-Finnish ears), often relying on pentatonic scales and archaic modes; but within this limits there is a richness of striking and appealing ideas (Kanteletar-Lauluja apparently contains some 64 songs, so maybe the variety is due partially to the judicious selection of 26 of them here - I don't know). There are touches of Sibelius, but - somewhat surprisingly - Janacek comes to mind more frequently. More importantly, they are really wonderful, haunting and evocative works and the sound-world they evoke is consistently wonderfully appealing.

They are also beautifully sung. Adventurous musical explorers may have come across Camilla Nylund before, and she is utterly convincing here - hers is a wonderfully airy and expressive voice. The baritone Hans Lydman is no less impressive, and Peter Stamm provides superb accompaniment. The recorded sound is good as well. To sum up, I found this disc to be an utterly enchanting discovery and I recommend it with enthusiasm.
