5.0 out of 5 stars Ys Seven is wonderful. Game of the year for the PSP for me., September 28, 2010

Let me break it down for you:

Ys Seven is a wonderful game, one you will cherish and hold dear to your heart. Definitely GOTY material for me.

Gameplay:

Ys Seven is an action based RPG that has you switching between 2 characters on the fly, and each attack differently based on your foes weakness, and at first, it's pretty easy to figure out, because you'll only have Adol and Dogi to work with. It gets a little more tricky when you have more characters to play with. Generally you move from town to town and learn what is happening in the local villages, enter the dungeon and pillage plunder them until you find the evil boss and duel them epically until the true victor stands tall! Ahem.. The thing I really liked about Ys Seven is that you can save anywhere.. And there is no need for stocking up on tents and what have you, because they always usually have a crystal outside ALL boss fights, and key event moments. On the other hand, you do have a limited inventory to hold healing supplies or remedies or things of that nature, but you get enough cash along the way that you can just transport back and forth from town to dungeon and re stock your supplies, another great feature in the game is the Synth system, you can do various extra quests, combine stuff and create armor, weapons, accessories, all that sort of thing. I got the ultimate weapon for the final battle for my fighters that way, definitely made a difference on the end boss.. Just sayin'.
The best part about the gameplay is that this is slick as can be, hardly any load times what so ever.. You can pick this up and just play forever, think you will just be there for like, 10 mins, yeah right, check your clock and an hour just flew by. This game is highly engrossing and addicting to play, but unlike all those other games, this does have an end, and you feel the ultimate satisfaction that you kicked booty. Ys Seven does allow for you to stray from the main quest, and gives you a bit of self exploration but ultimately you'll find yourself wanting to continue and find out what happens next. Roughly the game took me around 37 hours, not much re playability, but I'm thinking that further down the road I would indeed play this little game again.

Story:
So the story is about these two friends Adol and Dogi who seem to travel together, and along the way they are swept into these dramas and fantastical ordeals.. There are run away princesses, and mysterious blond skinny men who aren't ever who you think they are.. Sound familiar? Yeah it's kinda cliche, and even more so since the last game I finished on the PSP was Lunar: Silver Star Harmony, which was my first time playing that game actually (and this is my first Ys game)so you can see, there are some similarities, but I liked Ys Seven more than Lunar, I really did. Not saying that Lunar is bad, it's not, I truly enjoyed it, but the story here really was charming and easy to follow, and the ending really held more of an impact for me, especially between Tia and Maya. I felt the music really held a huge impact here as well, but I will elaborate on that in the music section.

Visuals:
For what it is, Ys Seven looks great, getting around is simple and Falcom really did let the little details shine! Granted there is a lot of back tracking through old areas but the way they moved you though and the slight changes they made to each area really helped you remember and become attached to certain areas and certain characters. The Kingdom of Altago is lush and vibrant in color, and it's everything you love about a good anime, or fantasy story. I have seen better visuals on the psp, but for the price (speed) this is perfectly fine, I have played quite a few DS RPGS and it's nice to see a fast PSP game that in fact also has better visuals.

Music:
Holy crap! The music will blow your mind, it will rock you so hard you'll find yourself humming and grinning while you frantically battle with your companions against a world full of enemies, collecting items to synth, or just exploring new areas. The boss music is especially good, and if you get the Collectors Edition you'll get a 22 track cd that comes with the game. Very very worth it, I listen to it at work and freak my co workers out. ;0

Last Thoughts?

This is a great game, refreshingly fast, simple to follow and has a great way of keeping you on track via the handy map. If you can afford it go ahead and pick it up while you still can.. It might just vanish into thin air! XSEED has localized some great stuff lately, keep them coming. I think I'll get the next 2 games that are coming out... Falcom you have a new fan out of me. :)

5/5

5.0 out of 5 stars Innocent Primeval Breaker, August 26, 2010
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Ys Seven: Premium Edition (Video Game)
As a huge fan of the Ys series who has played all the games chronologically, I can safely tell you that Ys Seven continues the amazing epic awesomeness of the series! The limited edition comes with a CD featuring music from Ys 7, an art book with amazing art from the three psp Ys games coming out, the game itself, and a cloth map! If you're not a Ys fan, you may find it odd that there is no "Ys" marked on the map... but this is only because you don't know the history x3 Ys is on there.
The game is a masterpiece thus far and although I haven't gotten to the end yet, I am close enough to say this game is well worth your money, even if you're not an Ys fan! I will be getting Ys (3): The Oath in Felghana as well as Ys I&II Chronicles, believe you me <3

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Game, fits right in with the rest of the series!, August 18, 2010
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars

As an over twenty-year veteran of the Ys series, I have to say that this game is awesome!
First the packaging: I bought the limited edition which comes in a rather large box with the UMD game case, Ys book, CD, and the cloth map. I love the book, all of the pictures are full-color, some I have seen before, but many I have not. There are no words, just pictures. The cloth map is really cool too, suitable for framing if I could find a frame big enough. My only complaint is the with the CD. The content is the music from the game, which is great. The cover art, however, is where they could have done a much better job with it in my opinion. It comes in a standard jewel case, the artwork on the front and on the CD itself is rather childish, and is also found in the book. The insert opens up into a list of the songs, 27 in all, and a short poem. There is no rear art at all. For a limited edition set such as this, they could have made it look a lot better with more dynamic art.
On to the game: While I have only played it for about four hours, so far I love it. The music is simply phenomenal, like the other games in the series. The load times are nothing like what they were in the PSP version of Napishtim. This game was made exclusively for the PSP, so load times are nice and fast. The story fits in with all of the other games in the series, if you have played any of the others, then you know what I'm talking about. The battle system is totally different, nothing at all like what you would find in Felghana or Napishtim. You start off with Adol and Dogi, and others join along the way. This is the first time in the series that you ever travel as a party, in all of the other games it is just Adol traveling around. All characters have very different battle styles. Adol uses the traditional sword and shield, and Dogi uses gauntlets. You also have to shift between them quite often (which is accomplished by pressing the circle) because there are some monsters that Adol can't hurt but Dogi can, and vice-versa. There is also a special power associated with each weapon which is used by pressing the R, and whichever other button you assign the power to. It's kind of like how the magic works in God of War: Chains of Olympus. Other features include being able to craft items with materials found along the way, such as iron ore, monster skins, or bones. I haven't used this at all yet, so I can't really comment on it. Also, weapons and items are bought in town, or found along the way, just like in the other games.
As I originally stated, this game is awesome, well worth the money. I'm not prepared to call in the best in the series yet (that honor is reserved for Felghana), but that opinion may change once I finish it. If you're a fan of the series, you're sure to love it. If you're a fan of action RPG's in general, then you'll probably love it as well.
