Amazon.com Review

Return to the world of Yu-Gi-Oh! with Dungeondice Monsters. This addictive strategy game for the Game Boy Advance is an exciting change for fans of the Yu-Gi-Oh! card games. The goal in Dungeondice Monsters is to defeat your enemy with summoned monsters by creating a dungeon that runs from your end of the playing board to your opponent's end.

You and your opponent each start with 15 six-sided dice and take turns rolling three of them at a time. The dice represent monsters. Each side of each die has a different crest. Depending on which crest surfaces during each roll, you can summon monsters and/or collect special moves. Once a monster is summoned, that die unfolds on the board, creating a dungeon section with six squares. You can then shape your dungeon by rotating this section with the R button. Once a dungeon section is created, you place the summoned monster on it and by successfully summoning enough monsters, you can unfold and link dice to reach and defeat the enemy Die Master.

The concept is simple, but gameplay is surprisingly difficult. You need crests for everything. For example, you might be able to summon a monster, but you won't be able to move it without a move crest or attack without an attack crest. Crests are also used for special abilities, magic, upgrades, and traps. And since crests are based on your collection of dice and the luck of your rolls, the game can get complex. Constructing the battlefield with unfolding dice provides almost unlimited replay value--not a single game is the same as any other. Unlike previous Yu-Gi-Oh! card games, you don't lose monsters if you lose a game. (You do win one die for winning a tournament however.) If you win a game, you win funds that you can use to buy new monster dice from Grandpa's Shop. You can also sell old dice. To top it off, you can play in tournaments and free duels and can even play linked duels and trade dice with a link cable.

Overall, Dungeondice Monsters is a fun and challenging game with unending variety–-a refreshing change. --Bryan Karsh

Pros:

  • Unfolding dice make an ever-changing battlefield
  • Play against a friend or trade via a link cable (two copies of the game required)
  • Over 100 monsters to collect

Cons:

  • A somewhat steep learning curve--read that manual!
  • Music is a little jarring
  • The continuous save system allows only one game to be saved

5.0 out of 5 stars Yu-Gi-Oh: not just for Nihon-jin anymore..., July 14, 2002

This review is from: Yu-Gi-Oh! Dungeon Dice Monsters (Video Game)
I have played the Japanese version of this game [and I hold high hopes for the English version]. As compared to the graphics of Dark Duel Stories, the graphics of Dungeon Dice are amazing [GBC to GBA, you do the math]. The game is a bit more complex than the Duel Monsters card game, and this makes Dungeon Dice a game that seems to be geared more towards older players. With a whole slew of monsters and a new twist on gameplay, Dungeon Dice makes for a worthy addition to anyone's GBA game collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars High Rolling Dungeon Dice! (Son & Father Review), March 17, 2003
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Yu-Gi-Oh! Dungeon Dice Monsters (Video Game)
I'm 8 years old and I wrote and typed this review by myself and no it was not for school.

The Dungeon Dice game is almost totally different from the card game!

If you have never played it I highly recommend it. If you don't have a Game Boy Advanced don't worry. On April 2003 the board game is coming out. I thought the Yu-Gi-Oh card game was great but when I saw this I went nuts!! It is one of the most amazing games I have ever played!!!! All the games made by KONAMI that I have played turned out to be AWESOME!!!

The Dungeon Dice game is very complicated. You need certain "crests" to move your monsters and other crests to summon your monsters and some crests even let monsters use their special abilities but that's enough about crests.

GOLD: you use gold to by new dice at Grandpa's Shop. TOURNAMENT: if you press this then you have to choose which kind of tournament you want to play in. If you win a battle in a tournament you get another die. If you win the whole tournament you get 100 gold and there will always be a gold cup next to the tournament you won. FREE DUEL: when you win a battle in a tournament you can play that same person if you press free duel in the menu screen. If you beat someone in a free duel then you also get a monster die.

That is all I know so far so I hope you will try this game!!

I'm the father of the above reviewer. I agree that this is a very good game. It is a nice combination of dice rolling randomness with strategy. It also is a novel use of the information from the card characters in a new setting. If you already have the first Yu-Gi-Oh GBA game, this one definitely is different; it's a new game in the same universe. The rules and game lay out seemed a bit confusing to me at first, but with the above-reviewer's assistance, we were playing smoothly within 20 minutes of turning it on. If you have not played the Yu-Gi-Oh card game already, it will probably take longer to get the feel of the game. We have definitely gotten our money's worth on this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars SWEET, February 10, 2003
This review is from: Yu-Gi-Oh! Dungeon Dice Monsters (Video Game)
This game is similar to the extravagent game we know and love as Duel Monsters. This new virtual board game is based on the hit show Yu-Gi-Oh! In several of the episodes a new player describes the rules (vaguely I might add)of this enthralling game. Dungeon Dice Monster's is a game where you set monsters, traps, and magic along a road created by the folding dice (cool!) to create passage that reaches your opponents heart points. Then your attack with your monsters you previously set to defeat your opponent. This is an awesome game. I'd reccommend it to anyone who likes board games or Yu-Gi-Oh!
P.S.-don't get lost in the dungeons, trust me your not gonna like it. <lol>
