4.0 out of 5 stars A great way to learn how to play the card game, September 21, 2004

= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Yu-Gi-Oh Power of Chaos: Joey the Passion (CD-ROM)
Like a lot of Yu-Gi-Oh fans, my son enjoyed collecting the trading cards but didn't really know how to play the card game. He and I would PRETEND to play it, but we weren't really following the rules (which are fairly complicated). But this software changed that -- he can now play the game properly and even win a fair amount of the time. (Me too!) You have to be willing to get beat several times at first, but persistence will pay off, and it eventually becomes pretty fun and addictive.

We don't own the "Yugi" or "Kaiba" versions of this game, but I'd guess that Joey is more fun to duel against. His trash-talking lines are kind of funny, even though they get old after repeated playings. And if you have 2 computers on your home network, you can have 2-player duels. (You don't have to own 2 copies of the game CD. Just start the game on one computer then take the disc out and then start it on the 2nd computer). We haven't tried the BattleLAN method of playing via Internet, but I'm going to check that out.

4.0 out of 5 stars Previous reviewer was off his head., May 28, 2004

This review is from: Yu-Gi-Oh Power of Chaos: Joey the Passion (CD-ROM)
(...) Joey The Passion is the 3rd installment in the PoC series on PC. This being the final one, and adding another 300 or so cards to the already expanding list of 466 or so. There will now be a total of 700+ cards to collect and use. This game will follow on in the previous tradition offering a one on one duel with a certain TV show character, this one being Joey Wheeler. The game follows the EXACT rules of the Yugioh CCG and the more duels you win the more cards you unlock.

The twist with this title is its LAN play, now you will be able to take your skills and newley built decks online and play against your best friend. You do not need the other two games to play this title but it is recommended to get access to the previous 446 cards.

The promo's are as follows...

5.0 out of 5 stars BIG improvement over Yugi the Destiny, February 15, 2005
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Yu-Gi-Oh Power of Chaos: Joey the Passion (CD-ROM)
So Konami did OK with Yugi, but left room for a lot of improvement. They did better with Kaiba, but still had some things to work out. Would the third time be the charm with Joey, and see them produce an excellent game?

The short answer: an emphatic YES. For starters, Joey has over 700 cards you can access, including all the ones from Yugi and Kaiba. You don't have to do anything to access cards already won on the two previous games, the program automatically gives them to you. Joey also contains a "level stars" system that allows you to track your skill level, and Joey alters his deck and his playing abilities to match yours. Even better, you can LOSE levels with losses, so there's always incentive to win enough times just to stay where you are! For fans of the cartoon series, Joey plays with a variety of decks as featured in various episodes: Escaroba's "Jinzo" deck, evil Bakura's "Spirit Board" deck, Weebil Underwood's "Insect Queen" deck, the "Revival Jam" deck used by the Marek slave that had "Slyther, the Sky Dragon" (though no Slyther is in it), etc. (I've not gotten to level 9--it's tough just trying to stay at level 8--so maybe Joey uses Marek's or Pegasus's decks at that level?) The game always remains a challenge, and with all the new cards, there's always something new to try for.

In addition, the graphics and music are great, and Joey's smart-aleck dialogue gets you into the action enough to where you want to put your fist through the screen to shut the little punk up. (Unfortunately, you still have no way of turning it off in case you want to save your monitor from such violence.) You also have the option of limiting Joey to just the cards in the "Joey" set, or allowing him access to all the cards available. You can block "forbidden" cards from being used or allow them into the game for more possible playing combinations. And you can import/export cards as you can in the other versions.

The only minor complaint I have (other than not being able to shut Joey up short of turning off the sound) is that you can sometimes win a special-tribute monster card before you win the necessary cards to summon it. I've won three "Red-Eyes Metal Dragon" cards...but STILL haven't won the "Red-Eyes Black Dragon" card needed to use it! Eh, well...There's plenty of other strong monsters to be more than a match for Joey. This is an excellent game.
