Incredible,
By Matt Huffman (California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Yu-Gi-Oh, Vol. 1 - The Heart of the Cards (DVD)
I was a little skeptical at first about the whole Yugioh idea. After sitting down and watching an episode on the KidsWB I found myself tuning in everyday for the next episode. Soon I was out buying the cards and even the old PS game. I'm a little older than the average Yugioh fan (probably) and I'm impressed. The only bad thing about this DVD that I noticed was the length. The [online store] site says its 90 minutes when in fact its only 60 minutes. That would be my only bad thing to report, and it isn't even a major issue. I highly recommend the Yugioh videos to everyone

SECOND Season?,
By A Customer
This review is from: Yu-Gi-Oh, Vol. 1 - The Heart of the Cards (DVD)
Nope ... let me explain to you what happened. There are two versions of Yu-Gi-Oh! ... a Sugar Coated version and a Version based on the Manga which is for teenagers and adults. The manga series lasted one season before it was finished and a new more kiddy version was made and THAT is the one KidsWB picked up.The Manga series showed a Yugi whose alter ego was a smoker, drank, cursed and was very sadistic. He broke someones mind so bad, he was reduced to a wimpering, cowering child and he even played a game similar to Russian Roulette. The manga version is in japanese only, but has subtitles and you could probably buy it somewhere but I don't quite know where. I personally think the other series is interesting, but this series IS Yu-Gi-Oh! Who needs curses, blood, perverts ... I welcome this more Kiddy version with open arms. Who needs another AKIRA? Plus these DVDs come packed with special extras, including music from the show itself, as all other songs will be released on a 14 track CD starting October 29th. So look for that if your a fan of the music, songs include " One card short " and " No matter what " Most likely the song " I'm not gonna panic " will be on there, at least I hope so :P

Suggestions...,
By
This review is from: Yu-Gi-Oh, Vol. 1 - The Heart of the Cards (DVD)
For those who read the complaints about the story line, the editing, etc., remember that the US TV series skips quite a lot of character development. To make up for it, I suggest people go and get all the back issues of Shonen Jump magazine (the US monthly), which starts with the first story of the manga in issue 1 (January 2003). Yugi is actually 15 years old, but he's rather short and a late bloomer. His grandfather owns a game store, and sells "Magic & Wizards" cards. The name Yugi actually means "games", and in the manga, his alter ego plays quite a few interesting ones...Also, the card game in the manga borrows VERY heavily from Magic: The Gathering (I'm surprised Wizards of the Coast didn't sue, and that they didn't get the US CCG licence...), including the card design. The US TV series skips about the first year's worth (50 or so chapters) of the manga...to go straight for the card battles.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Yu-Gi-Oh, Vol. 1 - The Heart of the Cards (DVD)

A mere shadow of its orignal version,
This review is from: Yu-Gi-Oh, Vol. 1 - The Heart of the Cards (DVD)
Yugioh is a perfect example of how americanizing and censoring can truly screw up as series. They show is abound with needless edits, baaad dialog, and much, much more.First, theres the voice acting. Yugi is supposed to sound like a timd, kind little kid. In the dub, he sounds like some stuck up 14 yr old loser. Dark yugi(yami yugi)'s voice sounds sooo deep and stupid, its hard to describe. Jonouchi (joey) now sounds like a dumb new yorker kid, which, belive me, does not fit his charectar. Seto kaiba sounds ok when he's acting tough and all, but as the other reviewer said, his attempts at being emotional sound way to fake. And the annoying voice acting goes perfect with the baad voice acting. Yami yugi ends up saying horrible lines like "OH NOOO! A TRAAAP CARD?", or "HEART OF THE CARDS!". Then, theres the edits, and to tell you the truth, the 100 word limit wont allow me to even describe HALF of the edits (and there are 500 so far OMG). First, to kiddyize the whole thing, they replaced anyone dying with being sent to "the shadow relm" or some other coverup. For example:When dark ryo bakura is confronted with gaurds (which i will get to later lol), he uses a card (morphing jar) to, not kill them like in the real version, but "send them to the shadow relm". Oh yeah, and kabia's parents didnt "die", they "disappeared"...lol i tell ya folks, this is just pathetic. Dont wast your money on this so called "Yu-Gi-Oh!"...

this dvd sucks,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Yu-Gi-Oh, Vol. 1 - The Heart of the Cards (DVD)
1 wrote a review once before but this is the worst episode of all the yugioh dvds i am a big fan but man they had to make this dvd suck. man and this is coming from a kid i think that the japenese way is better japenese voices japenese names and japenese intro they made this suck in america they should of made this just like its supposed to be but no they had to make this for 4 year olds i can handle violence i am mature for my age i am (...) a girl i agree with other reviewers that wrote here a while back ago THE JAPENESE YUGIOH IS SO MUCH BETTER. this show should be for 11 and up and the other way where it has the deleted scenes i think 4 year should not even watch this show. go like some other show like pokemon. so i like reading the books alot and parents dont even let 10 and younger read the books because its to violent they would cry. just to let you know of this.

Do not Diss the show! <good start!>,
By Rockgirl (Likin Park) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Yu-Gi-Oh, Vol. 1 - The Heart of the Cards (DVD)
First of all i have to say this thing is great! I used to have to wait for forever for the episodes to finally show the first on because there is many of them it takes forever1 Now if i wanna see the first episode that started the us craze i just pop this in! This is a great movie and a great start for an y yugioh fan! There has been some comotion going on about the 1st series and the 2nd series and so on. It is true though because the first series in America is the second in japan. I have read the reviews and can see why they do not show on tv in america. Alos a few of my freinds told me that they cuss alot and there is alot of violence. Let me tell you the first series is chalk full of violenc! The second series though is not very violkent at all. They are trying to keep its good name in america as a show for pretty much all age groups. in japan it is mostly for teens and adults. I have alos read some reviews and people are really dissing the us way of showing the episodes well if those people want violence and stuff why do they just go to japan and watch it there or buy the japanese versions of the episodes? and alos they say the parts were you can tell they are hoilding a gun and saying how dumb it looks i disagree. even though you can tell the gun is supposed to be there i am glad they deleted the guns. my mom would not let me watch the show otherwise and i am a teen! o well i hope that my freview helped you see another perspective oif yugioh. well bye!

Yu-Gi-Oh! Starts Here,
By A Customer
This review is from: Yu-Gi-Oh, Vol. 1 - The Heart of the Cards (DVD)
This is volume one of the Duel Monsters episodes (season 2 Japan, season 1 US). This DVD belongs in every Yu-Gi-Oh! fan's collection. The DVD contains several additional features including a spanish dub, music video and monster stats for the serious collector. Another reviewer was talking [...] about these American edited versions, however they are far superior to the actual uncut and subtitled versions that you CAN already get (if you can even understand them). The uncut version features guns, violence and obscure references to japanese culture that no one in America can identify with. This edited version de-emphasizes the violence and instead emphasizes the friendship and loyalty themes of the show. Again, this American version is a much more enjoyable video that you can feel comfortable with your kids watching over and over as they master their dueling techniques. This DVD contains 3 Yu-Gi-Oh! episodes and makes a great gift.

OH MY GOD...*BARF*,
This review is from: Yu-Gi-Oh, Vol. 1 - The Heart of the Cards (DVD)
This is without a single doubt, the WORST DUB EVER.I HATE 4Kids.Words cannot describe how badly they butchered this once good series. No doubt some idiot little kids will respond to this review with something along the lines of "LOLKDI HEY GESS WAT ITZ STILL GUD WHO NEED BLUD ADN PEWVERTS LOlO WHO NEEDS ANOTHHRE AKIRA LOLO(which,I will add,is a classic...)" There's NO character development any more, which,as anyone with half a brain can tell you,is very important. The dubbed voices are an insult to the original voice actors, who put their hearts into their voices!Jonouchi(Or "Joey") has a Brooklyn accent.Anzu(or "TEA" or whatever) now sounds stupid, and now acts stupid to match, unlike in the original, where she is very strong willed.Yugi's dub voice actor is a 40 year old!!Malik sounds like Skeletor, and now wants the millenium puzzle.(what?...)etc,etc.It now takes place in America, all the cards have had their pictures and names changed. The edits are all very lazy. All deaths are now replaced with 'being sent to the shadow realm' THAT MAKES ALOT OF SENSE.Everything is changed.EVERYTHING.Plot,everything!Things are cut for NO REASON!This disk is edited, and there's no original japanese track!!!The 'fine people' at 4kids seem to forget that most anime is not some American cartoon like the Flinstones or whatever. They make me absolutely sick to my stomach, ruining great series that the creators worked hard to make, gaining anime an unfair reputation!it makes me sick!!!Also, all the music has been replaced, and now these idiotic little tunes always repeat,I'm sorry this review is so random, all my hatred for this ABOMINATION is flooding out at once. There's tons more, but I'll spare you the discomfort of reading it,children.*rolls eyes* I'd give this demon-spawn a -10000000 if I could.STAY AWAY UNTIL 4KIDS FIGURES OUT HOW TO USE THAT WRINKLY THING IN THEIR HEADS. Pros-THE ORIGINAL WAS GOOD..OTHER THAN THAT NOTHING Cons-TOO MANY TO NAME. If anyone from 4Kids is reading this, counting their money from parents of stupid kids, please e-mail me at Sawquid@aol.com.Come on.I dare ya.Cowards...I want to set things right, but fate loves to mock me...

Hoping For a Subtitled Version?,
By A Customer
This review is from: Yu-Gi-Oh, Vol. 1 - The Heart of the Cards (DVD)
Hoping for a subtitled version to this horribly buthered anime? Unfortunately, 4Kids Entertainment ignores customer feedback so what we get is the lousy edited TV version. I've been fortunate enough to get a subtitled version to this show and I can honestly say I don't understand WHY 4Kids Entertainment decided to license an Anime that was specifically designed for TEENAGERS in the first place. This is also the SECOND season of "Yu-Gi-Oh!" (What happened to the first season?!)AND you'll only get 3 measly episodes on this DVD. The second season is actually 32 episodes long. The first episode of the second season was also skipped. What is edited? Mostly the battle scenes, swearing (these ARE teenagers after all), and interesting little character development tidbits. For example, "Joey" actually participated in beating Yugi up before he solved the Millennium Puzzle. This makes it more amazing that "Joey" even becomes best friends with Yugi. Most people wouldn't get within 2 feet of a person that beat oneself up. Which brings me to this: I can't remember if it's the first or second episode of this disc, but there's a lot of "flashbacks" from the first season. Yeah, like no one's going to notice that it's a LITTLE overdone, but 4Kids had to do SOMETHING to fill in the gaps that the first season would've revealed. There's a battle between Pegasus and Yugi. Pegasus's Japanese voice is so full of sarcasm and he LOVES to say in English, "No, no, Yugi-boy." The dubbed voice is annoying and doesn't have the sarcasm. In the Japanese version it really feels like Pegasus is playing a disturbing game using humans as his pawns. And in the dubbed Pegasus gives this whole history of the Shadow Games while dueling. It never happened in the original. I thought it was odd that Yugi and Pegasus were talking so much in a timed duel. I would give 4 or 5 stars to the original Japanese version because the plot is more complicated than 4Kids likes to show. And that whole "Heart of the Cards" wansn't so emphasized either in the Japanese version. I hope this was helpful to you. |
