3.0 out of 5 stars Great Series But Faulty Discs
I don't usually write reviews, but I felt like I needed to on this. First off this is one of my favorite anime series and the box-sets are worth the investment, but the reason why I gave this box-set 3 stars is the fact that the third and fourth disc don't work on an Xbox 360. It's not just the one I have, because I've ordered this before more than once and it just...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great End To An Excellent Series!!, January 5, 2011

RomerauxRockz (New Orleans ,Louisiana) - See all my reviews
I've been watching Yu Yu Hakusho since the age of 5, first on Adult Swim, & later on Toonami. Just the other day, I found this box set for an excellent price, and decided to buy it, and im glad I did! I started off with the final season because i've already seen the Spirit Detective, Dark Tournament, & Chapter Black saga's on Adult Swim/Toonami, and remember them pretty well. I haven't however gotten the chance to see the Three Kings saga because the show was canceled right before it. Anyways, the box set is pretty simple. Two thin cases containing two discs each, (4 discs total), with cool art on the cases and one of the four main characters on the box it self with the Yu Yu Hakusho logo, (In this case its Kurama). Alot of people have had problems with these new thin cases, saying that the claws break easily, and cause disc damage. Im extra careful with my box sets so I don't think i'll be experiencing this problem anytime soon. Now to the show itself. If your reading this reveiw on the fourth and final box set, and not the first, then im assuming you already know what Yu Yu Hakusho is all about, so I shouldn't have to explain that. I will however explain the Three Kings Saga for those like me who might not have gotten a chance to watch, but would love to.

Soon after his bitter victory against Sensui, Yusuke has returned to the human world, but can't get over the fact that his ancestral father Raizen interupped his fight with Sensui, killing him. After trying to find help from a former spirit detective, Yusuke is greeted by Raizen's henchmen and told that Raizen has invited Yusuke to Demon world, and the two other kings, Mukoro & Yomi have invited Hiei & Kurama respectivly. The only problem is that these three kings are in fact embroiled in a feud that ages back the about a thousand years. Fast forward a bit. Under unfortunate circumstances, Yusuke announces the first ever Demon Tournament, with the winner to be crowned Demon King for the next three or four years, before they have to do it all over again, as Yusuke puts it, sort of like a "Presidential election, but with fists". Now Yusuke, Yomi, Mukoro, Hiei, Kurama, and other lethal demons from demon world have to fight it out in a no holds barred tournament to crown the new king of the demon world. While this tournament was very good, I didn't enjoy it nearly as much as I did the Dark Tournement that came before it. Even though a few familiar faces from the Dark Tournament make apperances. However the fight between Yusuke and Yomi was epic, and well worth the wait. The ending was also very satisfying, and gave me closure to the series. Overall not a bad way to end Yu Yu Hakusho, & I plan to buy the first three box sets as well, just to own the whole series.

5/5.

The perfect ending for a great and classic show! As always, there's no limit to the fighting and funny comments and expressions of each character. Yu Yu Hakusho remains one of the best anime EVER! Totally worth the money and I recommend it to any true anime fan.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but not Great, September 11, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Yu Yu Hakusho: Ghost Files - The Complete Second Season (DVD)
Yu Yu Hakusho is a classic series of which I've been a fan of since I was a little girl, and a long series at that. So, I was ecstatic to find the complete series. I won't review the series here (there's a wiki page for it and plenty of online reviews for the show itself), just the box set.

Packaging:
Overall, I would have preferred a single box set, but considering the series length, the four sets take up very little self space. Each season is two thinpaks (each containing two discs) in a slim, thin box. Honestly, I wish the box covers were a bit thicker and sturdier, these will tear and show wear quite easily I'm afraid. Each season has a different character theme for the box and thinpaks, Yusuke, Kuwabara, Kurama, etc, and character themes for set of menus on the dvd's. Every inch of the box sets are covered in nice art, from beautiful line art on the inside of the thinpaks to colorful group artwork on the covers; the only undecorated space is the dvd's themselves, which are white with minor detail, but it's a nice bit of symmetry and simplicity to contrast the rest of the detailed and colorful packaging.

Dvd's:
The dvd's themselves are fairly simple; the sound and picture quality is excellent in both English and Japanese, and there are two sets of English subtitles -one that matches the English dub and one that is a direct translation of the Japanese, and both are in small, white unobtrusive font which is nice in that they don't clutter up the screen but is harder to read. The special features are nothing special; usually just trailers for other anime or one-paragraph character profiles. The main menu has no fancy video intro but it does have a really awesome rock-theme that plays in the background. Still, it would have been nice to have different music for different menus, as YYH sports a varied and catchy arsenal of themes.

Another nitpick is the weird cutting off points for the seasons - the Dark Tournament Ark starts in box-set one and ends in box-set three, and considering the number of Dark Tournament Arc episodes on box-sets one and three it would have been easy to fit them on the dvd's for box-set two, or add one more thinpak. I would not have minded even a slimmer (and by extension cheaper) fourth and final box set (The Three Kings Arc is under twenty episodes) if it meant each box-set would truly only contain one season each. This is a minor, organization complaint, though. It only really becomes an annoyance if you were to go looking for a particular episode to re-watch and it turned out to not be in the box-set you expected because it was tacked on to the beginning of the box-set after or the ending of the box-set before.

In conclusion, it's a great value for the money simply due to the series size, and everything is done well, but it would have been nice to see the distributors go the extra mile and splurge on thicker packaging, consistency in the art and better special features. I'm satisfied with these four box sets but if a more complete single box set comes out I'll be the first to see these and buy that. If you are already a fan of the series I recommend picking these up, but if you just want to test it out I'd recommend you find another way to watch a few episodes (funimation sometimes offers free streaming of their anime on their website) and see if you genuinely like it before you lay your cash down, as these won't have great resale value if it turns out it's not your thing.

A satisfactory job, but not an exceptional one. 3.5/5 stars, which for convenience I'll round up.

EDIT: Also, be careful when putting the dvd's back in to secure them firmly; they tend to fall out of their places a lot easier than other thinpaks I have had, my season 2 box-set in fact had one loose dvd Not a deal-breaking, you just have to make sure they are secure instead of just throwing them in all willy nilly.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I was always looking for an anime series equivalent to Dragonball Z. Well after searching and watching anime series after series for nearly 15 years, i finally found a series that just captures me from start to finish despite only being 112 episodes long. Anime fans, this anime series will capture your mind. Yu Yu Hakusho is the epitome and the quintessential of a great and awesome anime. Anime fans, enjoy this series. Chapter Black Saga is my personal favorite.

This review is from: Yu Yu Hakusho: Ghost Files - The Complete Second Season (DVD)
Hello fellow shoppers, I purchased Yu Yu Hakusho seasons 1, 2, and 4 from the ( CD Exchange ) great company, fast shipping and receiveing. The discs arrived in perfect condition. They play great with amazing sound, clarity, and color, each disc plays for over 2 hours. I love this show it has a mixture of comedy, drama and lots of action, with a bit of romance thrown in. Yusuke Uramashi is the notorious wise acre, and fighter, but he is a lot of fun, as are his friends. I also bought season 3 but from another seller, Well I will be in Yu Yu Hakusho heaven for a few days, lol (^_^)

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I've watched yu yu since i was in elementary and when it first appeared on adult swim. It is a great anime that i would easily reccomend to anyone. After seeing it end i was sad but happy cause i never saw the whole series as a kid. Blu rays are set to come out in the future and i will probably be investing my money in those to. Buy this dvd, you will not regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great anime, Great price., November 10, 2010

This review is from: Yu Yu Hakusho: Ghost Files - The Complete Second Season (DVD)
On a whim I decided to buy every episode of this anime, remembering how much I liked it years ago when it aired on toonami. I thought I may have grown out of it since then, and was worried this may have been a bad purchase. Thankfully, these worries were completely wrong. This anime is as good as I remember, and everything I hoped it would be. Amazon has it at an amazing price. (I picked up all 4 seasons, over 40 hours of anime, for under $80) The quality is great, it comes with both english and Japanese voices with subtitles for whatever you prefer, and some few fun extras. If you are on the line, considering whether or not to get this series, I highly recommend it. It was everything I hoped and remembered it being.
