I see all the great reviews for this game so I guess I'll be the bad guy

5.0 out of 5 stars Great fun for Yu Yu Hakusho Fans, October 11, 2004

This review is from: Yu Yu Hakusho Dark Tournament (Video Game)
Yu Yu Hakusho Dark Tournament is based on an anime series. Yusuke Urameshi, the main character, is a 14 year old. He was killed and brought back to life, and now is able to see ghosts.

The game puts Yusuke into an arena tournament fighting situation, with the familiar friends and foes from the show. There is a training mode to help you get started, and skirmish mode to practice your moves. Then there are arcade and dark tournament modes to get you into actual gameplay, moving through levels of difficulty.

You can't really compare the graphics in this game to other fighting games like Mortal Kombat. The point of Dark Tournament is to feel like you're immersed in the Yu Yu Hakusho world, and it does this quite nicely. The anime style and backgrounds are all very much of the Yu Yu Hakusho style. There are several different arenas to fight in, and many characters to choose from. Each character has his or her own style and look.

In addition to the basic fighting game, there is also a built in "token game". You earn tokens when you fight. You then move to the token game to use them. The token game is very much like a strategy card game, using a hexagonal based board. This addition makes the overall game much more long term. You have incentive to keep fighting, to earn tokens. Then in the token game you can build up your token stash to do better and better.

Definitely a game that any Yu Yu Hakusho fan will love, and play for a long time!

This game definately promises the YuYuHakusho action we now and love, the only thing i found frustrating about this game was that u have to defend constantly and takes some time to get used to how difficult it WILL be when u first get it, there r many scenes from the cartoon and can be fun, but if you want a really good not-so challenging fighting game, go for DBZ budokai (any #)
if u like yuyuhakusho then get this

I see all the great reviews for this game so I guess I'll be the bad guy

I got this game a few years ago off the bargain rack and took it back the next day. The game starts off with an impossible fight that you're suppose to lose. The worst part of the game is that there is no learning curve, the game has no tutorial on what the controls are, the players demensions on how the player attacks seems either small than the space the character takes up, or your reach is less than your opponents making it very hard to even attack them. I do a lot of games that are similar to this such as Street Fighter and Mortal Combat (the 2d fighting style games) and this is by far the worst one. It would have been ok if you could at least use cheats appropriately though but because of that, it throws everything out the window. (I rarely cheat on games, it just helps to improves games in which I do not like based on either the style of the game or the quality).

Pro's:
None...well it's Yu Yu Hakusho so that count's just a little

Con's:
No tutorial
Combat's starts off too hard and only gets harder
Cheats don't work properly
Poor graphics
Very limited gameplay
Poor controls
Seems like either a very low budget game or extremely rushed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than expected, December 20, 2010

Having played games like Budokai, I've learned not to expect a lot from fighting games based on animes. But after playing this, my opinion changed. The moves were plentiful and surprisingly creative. The graphics were pretty good and the story followed the animes with anime cut scenes part of the game. All in all, if you're a yu-yu-hakusho fan, then this game is worth playing.

If you like Yu Yu Hakusho you will love this fighter game. It is the only Yu Yu Hakusho game that came out for a console. It is a lot of fun and I enjoyed it thoroughly.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best fighting games ever made!, June 14, 2009

Ok i'll start the review by saying that the graphics and sound for this game are phenominal!! Anyway's I like the controls setting for the game, and the fact that most of the moves are easy to master. The story mode is one of the best i've ever played and of course it goes from the beggining to the end of the Dark Tournament saga. When you finish a match, there are cutscenes from the anime that you watch, and even title cards. Overall I gave Yu Yu Hakusho Dark mTournament a 5/5!

When I rented this game, I hoped this would be a good fighting game, with a good fighting system, and unique characters. For the most part, I got what I wished for. There's more characters than you can shoot a spirit bullet at, and loads of environments and extras. I only had a few problems with this game. The fighting system needs work, and the token game was very difficult and an unnessesary device. Plus, parents might not let kids play this because of 1 little cutscene after your first fight with Younger Toguro. I will quote.
Yusuke (thinking): "Stupid Yusuke! You were so scared you couldn't even freakin' move! You idiot! He's gonna kick your stupid @$$!" Otherwise, this is the perfect game for YuYu Hakusho fans. A must-own.

This was really fun. I especially had fun playing as Kurama/Yoko Kurama. Still, I got angry with Genkai's comments, and Koto(the fox girl) when your opponent wins, trying to get in the shot.

YOKO POWER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
