My initial impression of the bit set was much better than expected, based on some of the negative reviews of the sister product, the titanium drill bit set. The shipping box was well-padded and the metal case arrived with no exterior dings or scratches. The latch worked well right away and the hinges work smoothly. I am a professional contractor & electrical engineer with more than 30 years experience. Usually, I buy American made tools and accessories ONLY. Thought I'd take a chance on these. BIG MISTAKE.

Drills arrived in POOR PACKAGING. Several had fallen out of CHEAP METAL BOX. The drills were BARELY SHARPENED & OFF-CENTER.
The drills are multi-colored - obviously from overheating in cheap oil to make them "LOOK" special.

There is no independent confirmation these are cobalt alloy. In fact, I used three of them just to drill slowly into dry oak base molding. BROKE THREE DRILLS INSIDE OAK!!! WTF!!! I will never buy tools again from the Tool Crib, or from Amazon. Stick with USA made such as Norseman, Tru-Cut or Triumph Twist. Sure, you pay two to three times more, but you'll never break one unless you use it for a chisel.

This is what happens when one try to savea few $$$ and buys product made by forced CHINESE PRISON LABOR.

My initial impression of the bit set was much better than expected, based on some of the negative reviews of the sister product, the titanium drill bit set. The shipping box was well-padded and the metal case arrived with no exterior dings or scratches. The latch worked well right away and the hinges work smoothly. The entire interior of the red-painted metal case and the enclosed bits were liberaly coated in oil. The drill bit size conversion table was effectively made illegible by soaking up excess oil, in spite of the plastic laminate covering on the table. Oddly, the table referred to titanium bit sizes. The bits are very sharp. I was not able to confirm the cobalt composition of the coating, I'll try to do that in a lab later. The bits do not have an even yellow coating on them like more expensive sets, looking more like poorly-done gun bluing, but the coating appears to be even. I randomly selected bits, rolled them across a flat surface and all are straight. The drill indices hold the bits well, but the pivoting indices that hold the larger bits tend to catch and hang up when attempting to open them up from the closed position.

However, the set appears to be fairly well made, and while the excess oil is a little annoying, I'd rather have that than rust. I purchased this set to be used predominantly on brass and steel. If I have any bad experiences during operations I will add to this report!

1.0 out of 5 stars Beware: Yukon Tool is posting fake reviews!, January 26, 2007

Disclaimer: I absolutely despise reviewers who see fit to comment on something they haven't purchased. Despite this, I see no other way to convey to others considering this purchase the unfortunate discovery I've made regarding some of these reviews.

I am rating this item one star in an effort to offset the THREE five-star reviews clearly posted by Yukon Tool employees or supporters. Note that at this time there are only six five-star reviews; these three fraudulent ratings constitute HALF of the strongest praise (I didn't look into any four-star reviews). Cases in point:

1) Horse Girl (Bismarck ND), "Cobalt SmoBalt", June 27, 2005 - This "person" has written five reviews between 2003 and 2005, ALL of them for Yukon Tool products, ALL of them five-star ratings and glowing reviews. (I was personally offended to discover this, because I had come to hold "her" review in high regard when considering making this purchase.)

2) sugar Woods "Sugar Woods" (VA), "Wanted a good deal and got", January 9, 2007 - Has written four reviews, ALL of them on Jan 9 '07, ALL of them for Yukon Tool products, ALL of them five-star ratings and glowing reviews.

3) glen schmidt (CA), "I think the engineer is waving his flag to hard", April 13, 2004 - Has written two reviews, BOTH of them on April 13 '04, BOTH of them for Yukon Tool products, BOTH of them five-star ratings and glowing reviews, BOTH of them address less-favorable reviews in an attempt to refute or discredit them.

This is absolutely pathetic. I'm sure the whole of Yukon Tool cannot be rotten - this is likely the work of some marketing or sales idiot who lacks dignity and any real skill at selling a product - and if I were Yukon Tool I would push to have that individual released and these fraudulent reviews removed.

I had my set for couple weeks now and I have already broken a bit. The material is very brital. While drilling steel the bit broken in half. I also discover that the tip surface is not exactly even/symmetrical which results in your work piece wobbling on initial contact. Once the bit digs into the work piece the wobbling stops. I compare this wobbling affect with a USA made bit and there were zero wobble with the USA bit. These bits are sharp and will go through steel like butter. Overall I am not happy with the purchase. I would return it if I hadn't broken a bit. It was a waste of $60.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great for my use, November 3, 2005
This review is from: Yukon Tool YT115CD 115 Bit Cobalt Twist Drill Bit Asortment in Metal Index (Tools & Home Improvement)
I'm a industrial mechanic and I do a good amount of fabricating. Including a lot of drilling and tapping. Even through "AR" these bits do very well. With low speed and cutting fluid I get much life out of these. I have had no success with sharpening these bits. Once the surface is worn or damaged the bit is trash. Turn your torque down on smaller bits. They will break fairly easy.

For the price and what I use them for "5 stars". For a machine shop "1 star". It all comes down to what you need and how much you want to spend. I just bought a second set for the shop at work.

I really wish I had paid more attention. "Cobalt coating" is a non-existent foolishness, but all I saw was the "cobalt" part. It's not clear what these drills are made of, but it ain't a cobalt steel alloy.

Almsot all the number drills are sized wrong, and the several smallest are all the same incorrect diameter. Not serious tools.

Beware. Only the index box is worth having, but it's a pretty expensive box at 60 bucks.

I truly appreciate the comments on this drill set. I've decided not to order the 115 pc. set. I must question my judgement for having considered this set. The value of any coating is lost immediately when the bit is sharpened and a such seem ill-suited for anything but casual, homeowner use. Quality control seems to be lacking as drills are out-of-round, the drill point angle is uneven, etc. The drill point angle can be corrected but there goes any perceived advantage of a coating. Never mind drill point angle and coatings...an out-of-round drill bit is worse than no bit. In closing, two things come to mind. #1 is, "you get what you pay for". #2 is, "if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is". Thanks to the reviewers.

Mine came liberally oiled but not excessively so. Bits seem to perform well, case is not a mega-$$$ item, but overall, is pretty nice with sizes nicely legible. Very good value, IMHO....
