Learn to knit with AMAZING novelty yarns! New and creative!,
By
This review is from: Yummy Yarns: Learn to Knit in 20+ Easy Projects Featuring Fun Novelty Yarns (Paperback)
As a beginner knitter, I was happy to find "Yummy Yarns". The project patterns with novelty yarns are very cool and wearable. This is the first book I found that discusses novelty yarns in categories including eyelash, fur, metallic fuzz and a hot new yarn called jelly yarn! The authors make learning to knit fun and easy as they explain the ins-and-outs of knitting with these brilliant specialty yarns.
Really clear step-by-step color photographs improved my knitting skills; knitting, purling, and especially increasing, decreasing and binding off. "Yummy Yarns" will inspire you to begin knitting beautiful yummy scarves, purses, tops, sweaters with colorful forgiving novelty yarns.

While I am not a beginning knitter...,

but rather a "relearning" knitter, I found Yummy Yarns to be a wonderful guide to the new and fun yarns in the market today. I learned to knit years ago with worsted wool and other boring types. Today there are so many more fun yarns to work with and Yummy Yarns provides a direction for the use of these fun yarns.
Despite the fact that this book was published in 2004, you may find that obtaining some of the yarns used in the projects is difficult. For instance, I had to use ebay to find the yarn used in the cover project, Gedifra Costa Rica. However, the book does offer suggestions on substitution yarns and using gauges helps in finding suitable replacements. The projects are directed mostly toward beginning knitters, but experienced knitters might enjoy some of the patterns offered. Keyhole scarves are very sophisticated and make wonderful gifts. The scarf called the "Eyelash Scarf" knitted up wonderfully using different yarn and made a wonderfully received gift. Note that it has a wonderful solid-colored "border" at each end that gives it a designer look. There are some fun bags to knit as well as accessories for jean jackets. For yarns that I could not find, I made note of the suggested substitutions in the pattern and look forward to these other projects. Yummy Yarns has proven to be a yummy venture!

I was given this book as a gift from a close friend after mentioning I'd like to start knitting. I've referenced many knitting books to guide me but have often found inspiration in this particular one. There are basic instructions both for learning how to knit and numerous different stitches, as well as pictures.
This book is an excellent reference for almost any piece of knitting and I enjoy trying out the different stitches by making scarves and adorable little tops. I would recommend this book as a great reference to have in any knitter's collection.

There are so many knitting books out there its hard to know which one to choose. Well I definitely reccomend "Yummy Yarns." Ms. Ziegler and Mr. Greco do an excellent job presenting more than just the standard beginning knitting projects. The authors are so creative! I found that the instructions were very well written and easy to follow and I especially loved the layout.
Great book! I love to knit! Thanks Yummy Yarns!

Novelty for Beginners,

Thus book is not well-done. The pictures seem over-colored and blurry with hand shadows. The instruction section gave me a headache. All white yarn on a blue background. White is not a good yarn to demonstrate things in. It tends to bleach out in photos.
This book does have a good description of novelty yarns (eyelash, fur, fuzz, flat, chunky, multi-strand, metallic and jelly) in case you didn't know what to call each of them. And the patterns? Just would you would think. Garter, garter and wait for it....a little stockinette! Lots of fuzzy cuffs, a denim jacket ruined with some kind of novelty knitted sleeve and some simple top patterns. The only thing that was interesting to me was a jelly bag mainly because I was not aware of jelly yarn. This is just another book capitalizing on the knitting craze and marketing itself to new knitters who love novelty yarn and need simple patterns.

Perfectly fantastic for a new or "older" knitter,

I had been away from knitting for so many years and was happy to become re-interested with this book. I had forgotten many details and once again found myself making gifts for friends and family. I knitted several scarves for giftgiving and was happy to see so many happy recipients. The instructions were easy to follow and the new yarns created the latest in fashion. I have not tried the "jelly" and many other novelty yarns but was happy to learn about them through this book. Loved having such a guide to "Yummy Yarns". I will continue to buy her wonderful instructional guides.

There are several cute basic patterns for scarves and simple garments in this book. They can all be made with other yarns than the ones called for if they are hard to find. Some of the novelty yarns are in the sale bins now, and they can be used in combination with any yarn that you have. The only thing you have to do is get the gauge specified in the pattern. Do a gauge swatch, doesn't every knitting book tell you that?
