Boogers are yucky!,
By
This review is from: Yummy Yucky (Leslie Patricelli board books) (Board book)
I got this book for my shower along with the Quiet/Loud book. Now that my son is a year old, we've only recently gotten interested in these books. I do understand others' comments about not wanting to introduce boogers and earwax, but really why not? They're not bad things... they're just yucky. While my son is still a little young to really get the humor of this book (it really is very funny), he loves the colors and the pictures of the baby on each page. And I think he does get the concept of things that are yummy (we make yummy noises at every meal) vs things that are yucky (every time he goes to put something he shouldn't into his mouth, I repeat "that's yucky. we don't eat that)
All things considered, an entertaining and unique children's board book.

We introduced this book to my toddler at an age when he was eating sand in the sandbox and grabbing pretty much anything else he could get into his mouth. This book was a fun way to explain why we don't eat sand, kitty litter, or worms. He loves this book, and we do too! We all always laugh out loud when reading it. The illustrations are really colorful and bold, and the text is downright funny. Some people are offended by the advice not to eat earwax or boogers, but if you think it's not bad to warn a toddler about that (or even funny!) then your family will love this book.

A good book for development,

I am a speech therapist who works with children ages 0-3, and this book is probably one of my favorites to use in speech therapy. Many of my clients are kids who have not started talking by age 2, and nearly all of them will sit for this book. Visually, I like the simplicity of each page, with a single illustration on each page, and all of the "yummies" on the left, and the "yuckies" on the right. Also, the simple repetitions are good for stimulating speech and cognitive development.
Many people in their review of this book have mentioned the more questionable "yucky" items, such as hot sause, earwax, and sand. Now I've presented this book to dozens of kids, and I've never had behavior problems result from this book. However, part of its enjoyment is the humor that derives from the yucky items - if you find the phrase "Burgers are yummy, boogers are yucky" distasteful, then I recommend trying Laura's "Big Little" or "Quiet Loud" books instead. These books will give you the same development benefits, without having to venturing into your personal definitions of "yucky"!

We Heart Yummy Yucky,

We have a blast reading this book - it cracks my kid up everytime! Leslie's illustrations are bright and textural, and the baby character is hilarious! We've read all three of her books over and over. I see that there are a couple more coming out soon -- looking forward to reading them as well!

My boys LOVE this book and I have to say I do too. The illustrations are adorable. My four year old has it memorized. The burgers are yummy and boogers are yucky makes him laugh so hard. Although the first time he read about the ear wax he wanted to try that. Crazy kid. So it gave me a good laugh too. I think this is a great book that makes learning to read fun for little boys...and I am sure some girls too.

Yummy Yucky is a great way to talk with your baby about what to eat and not to eat. It's funny! We are vegetarians and we still love this book. OK, it has burgers, but we eat veggie burgers! I have a four year old son who loves to read this to my 18 month old. The word repetition in this book and Leslie Patricelli's other books make them great for early readers. We love the art, too!

Should have veggies as a YUMMY,

I really like the idea of this book, but with all the obesity in kids and in America today, ice cream and cupcakes should not be on the 'yummy' pages of this book. Not that they aren't yummy, but peas, spinach or fresh fruit should be listed as yummy. I was just disappointed that with so many weight issues, and I'm trying to raise my baby to love his veggies (which he does), it's a bummer books like this don't exemplify healthy nutritious eating.

This is my daughter's favorite book. There aren't that many good opposite books out there and this one is wonderful. She loves books, but she could read yummy yucky and the 2 others in the series over and over. It is enjoyable for adults too-great illustrations and quite witty-you won't tire of it-believe me-we've read it about 8 times a day since we got it 6 months ago. It is indeed quite YUMMY!

This is a wonderful book and my toddler loves it! It has simple pictures and bright colors to engage young ones. I love the simple, but very effective design of the book, yummy things on the left and yucky things on the right. These pairs include: spaghetti/worms, blueberries/blue crayons, soup/soap, sandwiches/sand, mommy's cookies/mommy's coffee, chocolate sauce/hot sauce, apple pie/mud pie, burgers/boogers, eggs/earwax, fish sticks/fish food, and ice cream/too much ice cream. The last page includes several small pictures of more yummy (pizza, banana, milk, toast, peach, cheese, cupcake, and chicken) and more yucky (garbage, dog food, dish soap, apple core, kitty litter, toilet paper, stinky socks, and a centipede) things. This is a very fun book to read to your children, who are able to learn important lessons about what is ok to eat and not, while they have fun.
I referenced being a vegetarian because many of the negative reviews seemed to be from vegetarians upset that meat foods were listed as a yummy. Well, I would have preferred meatless yummy foods, but since most people are meat eaters, I wasn't surprised or upset to see them under the yummy foods. Nor was I upset to see a few treats in there either. I think the point was to pick very common and basic foods that MOST children are familiar with. The book works very well for getting the point across of what items are safe or not to eat. I try not to take my baby books very seriously. Anyway, I highly recommend this for young children, as well as any books by Leslie Patricelli.

If I had seen what the yummy versus yucky comparisons were, I would not have bought this book.
Readers are correct that yucky items include boogers, ear wax, hot sauce, etc. and I do find those things sort of odd and maybe not appropriate. For that alone I would not have purchased the book. What I find even more problematic, though, is that the yummy options in the comparisons are 80% junk food, empty carbs, processed foods, or animal products. Specifically they are: Spaghetti, blueberries, soup, sandwiches, cookies, chocolate sauce, apple pie, burgers, eggs, fish sticks, and ice cream. Then, a page at the end lists more yummy foods: pizza with pepperoni, banana, milk, toast, peach, cheese, cupcake, and chicken. I am not sure we should be introducing babies and toddlers (and remember this is a board book, or at least available as such, so it is directed to very young kids) to the idea that they should be enjoying cookies, chocolate sauce, apple pie, burgers, fish "sticks", ice cream, pepperoni pizza, cheese, and cupcakes. Maybe we are naive, but we are really aiming to have our daughter avoid really sweet or heavily processed foods until she hits school age, at least, and encourage limited consumption of animal products, esp. in their processed and factory farmed versions. Having said this, the book is neat to look at, is about 6.5 to 7 inches long on one side, and is almost a square. It's a little large for our 9 month old, but it is quite sturdy and I am sure she will grow into it. I bet the other books by this author on a different topic, but in the same format, are pretty good... |
