5.0 out of 5 stars comprehensive and definitive, June 17, 2010
By
E. Worth (Melbourne, Aus) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Yup'ik Eskimo Dictionary (Paperback)
This is the definitive source for the contemporary Yup'ik language. An assiduous attempt was made to incorporate every possible Yup'ik word and root and comprehensive notes are provided for each entry. Lexical roots are covered first, followed by postbases, and finally an English-Yup'ik index, with a number of appendices covering doubtful words recorded by early ethnographers and grammatical tables.

Below is an entry chosen at random:
tali- (root)
talicivik: shelter for smoking fish, smokehouse *neqnek aruvarqiyartua talicivigmi: go smoke the fish in the smokehouse <talite-i[2]-vik
talin: screen, shade <-n
talineq: shadow, shade *naparpallraam talinrani neryartuulta: let's go eat in the shade of the big tree <-neq[1] or -neq[4]
talite-: to shelter from wind, sun, rain, snow, etc. *talituq: he or it is sheltered; talitaa: he or it is sheltering it.

An excellent companion to the author's Practical Grammar of the Central Alaskan Yup'ik Eskimo Language.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yupik dictionary, February 25, 2008
This review is from: Yup'ik Eskimo Dictionary (Paperback)
This dictionary was written by my uncle. He really researched this before he published it. He also dedicated this dictionary to my grandmother. He spent time in Kwethluk, AK and the Kuskokwim area. My mother is 100% Yupik Eskimo and my uncle is white and from California. My mom has to contact my uncle sometimes to get annunciations and spellings. It is pretty amazing! I am very proud of my uncle and hope you enjoy this dictionary.
