Book Description

June 2, 2001
Ur-Surrealist Yves Tanguy belonged to the inner circle of the 1920s Parisian avant-garde, alongside such figures as Salvador Dal', Max Ernst, and Alberto Giacometti, making essential contributions to Surrealist manifestoes, magazines, and exhibitions. Tanguy's artistic obsession was the world of imagination, of dreams and reveries, and his cryptically codified imagery continues to perplex audiences today. His paintings seem to exist in a hazy, oddly beautiful limbo dimension beyond time and space, a world at once vertiginous and calm, disturbing and breathtaking. The central focus of Yves Tanguy and Surrealism is the Surrealist mode, to which Tanguy dedicated himself like no other painter of his time, cementing the movement's place in the history of visual art. On the basis of previously unpublished documents and works, authors discuss Tanguy's otherworldly oeuvre in all its aspects--from his development as an artist to the reception of his work in the United States. With stunning reproductions in full color as well as black and white, Yves Tanguy and Surrealism is an extensive overview of the work of an artist whose forays into the creative unknown continue to resonate.

About the Author

Yves Tanguy was born in Paris in 1900 and started painting in 1923, inspired by the work of Giorgio de Chirico. In 1925 Tanguy met André Breton, and was soon invited to join the Paris Surrealists. From then until the late 1930s, Tanguy participated in numerous Surrealist exhibitions and was the subject of several solo shows, including a show in the US in 1934. In 1939 he moved to New York, and eventually became an American citizen. He died in Waterbury, Connecticut in 1955, and a year later was the subject of a retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art, New York.

5.0 out of 5 stars A True Tanguy Fan August 10, 2001
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
My oh my, what a fascinating book this is. If you've been pulling your hair out as long as I have waiting for this book, well, I have some good news and some bad. The bad is, you're probably bald already like me (and Tanguy too!) the good though, is that your prayers have finally been answered. Finally, a hardcover with page after page of mouth watering color repos of Tanguy's finest. Complete with analysis and in-depth discussion of what makes Tanguy's work so important. Looking back, there really was no other surrealist quite to touch him. So haunting, so original, and sadly for many, so unknown. Hopefully this book will remedy all that. By all means, indulge yourself...we've all been waiting so long for this volume! Five stars wholeheartedly!

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, a real book on this master of surrealism! July 12, 2001
Format:Hardcover
If you're a Tanguy fan, you've probably wondered when there would finally be a full-length volume on his work. Here it is, and it's great. If you are already familiar with his work, you will find dozens of reproductions of work you could never have seen. The color plates are beautiful and most of his major works are represented. The essays reveal information you will not find anywhere else. Overall, this book is ESSENTIAL if you are enthralled by Tanguy's painting and life. Also recommended is the biography of Tanguy's wife, Kay Sage, also a surrealist painter, called "A House of Her Own."

5.0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Book April 9, 2008
Format:Hardcover
This is a fantastic book but I don't think most people would want to spend nearly $500 for a copy. I was able to find a copy on AbeBooks (in Germany) and had it shipped to the U.S. for less than $50 total. If interested try AbeBooks or Alibris. I hope all lovers of Tanguy's work can get a copy. Even if you can only get a German language text version the color plates and reproductions are worth the purchase!
