Product Description

Product Description

Arimaa is a game where stronger animals like elephants and camels try to push and pull the weaker ones from the opposing team into traps while one of the rabbits tries to sneak across the board and harmlessly reach the other side. The first player to get a rabbit to the other side wins. This may sound like a simple kids game; and while it is easy enough for your kids to learn and enjoy, you will find that it is also a very deep game that can take a lifetime to master. Arimaa® is one of the deepest strategy games ever invented in the history of mankind, but designed to look intuitively simple. In just the first ten moves of Arimaa® there are more possible games than there are atoms in our universe. No two games of Arimaa are ever the same. There is much to learn and discover about this intuitively simple, yet intellectually challenging game. This game also doubles as an animal-themed chess set! For 2 players, ages 10 and up Playing Time: 60 minutes

The pieces have a good weight to them, and the board is well-made.

This game by contrast opens a world of possibilities with a seemingly infinite number of strategies and ways to play that can be quickly picked up by anyone.

Good construction. Pieces are nicely weighted. That's the product.

The real pleasure is in playing the game though.

I was a tournament chess player in my youth and wasn't sure if Arimaa could give the same challenge and sense of satisfaction as the old game. After I received the board and starting playing I found that my concerns were unfounded. This is a great strategy game and gives a whole new life to the 64-square board game genre. If you are burned out on chess and think Checkers is boring, this just might be the game for you.

My 9-year-old daughter picked up the rules easily and we have a great time playing in the evenings. I highly recommend the product and the game.

This board is much better than I expected it to be. Going by the computer rendering on the cover, you'd think the pieces were cheap plastic. But don't let this fool you! They're plastic, but they're also weighted and have a very convincing marble look to them. So they almost feel like stone. I was pleasantly surprised

On top of that, the pieces all look angry, like they're going to war. They have death-stares, flaring nostrils, and bulging neck muscles - even the rabbits

The board's dimensions are less than a normal chess board, but I personally see this as a positive because it can fit on smaller or cluttered surfaces.

I play arimaa online, and I can say the rules booklet that came with the set is accurate and clear. To get used to the rules, try playing with only 4 rabbits, 1 cat, and 1 dog for each player.

Overall, 5 stars. Even at the full price!

Arimaa is an abstract strategy game for two players. It is mostly intuitive and simple to learn. While it has some similarity to Chess and the Chinese classic Dou Shou Qi, it is vastly different and superior to both. It is not "chess reborn", but rather abstract strategy games reborn! Whereas most abstracts created in the last 50 years are overwhelmingly tactical games which either lack clarity, depth or strategic wealth; Arimaa has a great deal of each. A slightly opaque game unfolds over time to reveal one of the most enjoyable games I have played. I have over 50 abstracts in my collection and Arimaa comes only second to Go. The book on the game is also a valuable addition. It is not a "how to" book that lays out opening theory. It is more of a passionate account of the author's engagement with both the game and the gaming community and the isights learned along the way. It also gives great insight into what might be great about this game - why it might stand the test of time where others like Camelot, for example, have not. It will expand your appreciation of Arimaa and improve your gaming experience; not by teaching you have to rote-learn moves, but rather how to appreciated the wealth of strategic and tactical possibilites of the game. I highly recommend buying both.

After I bought this set, I was able to play many enjoyable games of Arimaa. Arimaa is an abstract strategy game (details at [...]) Arimaa is the best board game I've every played, and it is easy to learn and fun to play for just about anyone. This set itself is fairly well made, includes well written rules, and definitely worth the price. I would recommend it to everyone.

I won't get into all the rules and descriptions that appear in other reviews, I'll just get into the nuts and bolts of this fun game.

Arimaa is the biggest secret of modern board games of the last ten years. If you're a parent, teach your children this game as opposed to chess. Arimaa will help develop your child's intellectual and analytical skills, cognitive and spatial skills, your child's concentration, imagination, and creativity. All the benefits of chess only using simple intuitive rules! This means teaching this game to a four or five year old is a breeze. Though with a four year old, I'd probably just start with half of the pieces, say Elephant, Camel, two Horses, and four Rabbits, until they're used to the game play. Of course, this is a testament to the game's flexibility and versatility. Try playing an interesting game of chess without the knights and bishops!

Of course, don't think I'm implying this game is for kids. I'm in my 40's and I haven't played chess regularly in years. I just picked up this game last week and it has reinvigorated a long lost love of board games. Not only is it nice to grease the gears of my own analytical skills, it's also nice to sit back and play a game that I won't have to spend years studying to become competent (only to get my butt kicked by a computer program the rest of my life!). A nice resource I found at Arimaa.com in the Gameroom are numerous "bots". These are programs created by a healthy group of computer programmers trying to come up with one that can play nearly as well as a human. Though they have some that are pretty good (and some beginner bots that I was able to beat on my first game), none of them are even close to beating a "solid" human player.

This game is a little difficult to figure out at first. You can pick it up quickly, though. After 2-3 games we had it all figured out. The games go more quickly than chess. I think the great thing about this game is the strategy. There are so many possibilities that it makes coming up with a single strategy difficult. But you can still play well and have fun against equal peers without much strategy. In other words, its great for those looking for a challenge, but also, it's simple enough to play without much strategy.
