Product Description

ZMG7081 Mondo by Z-Man Games

This game is designed by Michael Schacht of Zooleretto (and other games) fame. The object is to create a world landscape in 7 minutes. Players race to get tiles to match up landscapes - seas, deserts, forest, etc as well as competing to get a selection of animals (pictured on the tiles) into your design. Three rounds of play, special goal tiles for bonus points, and a solo play option is available in this game. Games also comes with a cool timer.

From the Manufacturer

Fashion your own world full of exotic animals and a variety of landscapes. Keep a sharp eye on the clock and the other players, because everything happens simultaneously. Jump out at the right time and reap a couple more bonus points. Mondo is a tile game with particularly simple rules. The varying game system, with its three levels of difficulty, is intended equally for experienced and inexperienced players. And if you’ve got no one to play with, you can play Mondo solitaire.

Mondo is a really simple to learn and fairly simple to master board game (it can be made more difficult, depending which difficulty level you choose to play) with easy to understand instructions and good but simple graphics that can be played solo or with friends and family. It is a timed tile-placement game, with everyone grabbing from the same stack of tiles during each round and trying to build their best series of complete landscapes without making mistakes...mistakes being incorrectly matching borders for the most part. You get more points for having animals in your landscapes at the end of each round, and can get additional bonuses for completing optional tasks or having the most of a certain type of animal. The tiles are nicely done but nothing too fancy, and there are four game boards included, each with a water side and a "landscape" side. The only complaint I have with the components of the game is that the included timer does not function very well, if it functions at all. Since the rounds are timed, having a working timer is pretty critical to playing the game. I've had to stop playing just to restart the timer several times, and that gets very frustating, so finally I went out and purchased a more reliable sturdy kitchen timer. The rounds are 6 to 7 minutes (depending on difficulty level) and so, you'll probably never spend more than 1/2 hour on a game session, which makes it ideal for quick gameplay sessions. I like Mondo very much, I wish there were more board games of this type (some other good tile placing games: Carcassone, Zombies in my Pocket).

This is a favorite at our weekly game nights when the crowd is smaller. It's a tile building game in which you build your own little ecosystem according to a strict set of rules. Everyone pulls tiles from a common pool and you are all under a time limit. This puts a lot of pressure on the players and they must prioritize completing their ecosystem, or on achieving certain goals to score points. If you have ever played Galaxy Trucker, this is very similar to the ship building phase. The big difference is that Mondo is ALL building phase. Once time has run out and everyone has finished building, people's lands are scored according to different criteria. The great things is that some of these criteria are different from match to match, adding a great deal of re-playability. The only important thing to note about this game is it is only 2-4 players.

Great game. All of the pieces were there. The timer for this was a little confusing to use; you just have to remember to turn it a complete turn before you set the actual time

It is what it is, and what it is is a very decent timed puzzle game. It isn't the most amazing thing ever, but games are quick and it is interesting enough.
