Lots of people have written great reviews of the original Carcassonne and all of its expansions on Amazon (or Board Game Geek), and that is not the purpose of this review. If you are interested in learning more about the game or expansions itself/themselves, just go to the product page for the base game or expansion you are interested in.

The goal of this review is to discuss the packaging and components of the Carcassonne Big Box. That said...

This IS A big box, but it's not huge. At 17 inches X 12 inches X 4 inches it easily stacks with several of my other larger game boxes like Star Trek Fleet Captains, etc.

And, it is a real bargain over buying the base set and included expansions separately (I bought mine from Cool Stuff Inc and got an especially good deal... but the savings would be even bigger if you had to pay regular retail for everything).

The Big Box contains the base game, two large expansions (Inns & Cathedrals and Traders & Builders), six small expansions (The Flying Machine, The Messengers, The Ferries, The Gold Mines, Mage & Witch, and The Robbers), plus one mini expansion (The Crop Circles). This provides several dozen of combinations of sets to play, giving it a very high replayability value. Unfortunately, it does NOT include "The Rivers" tiles that you would get if you buy the base game by itself.

The inside of the box is very well organized. Everything has its own compartment. This is very cognitively satisfying for those of us with mild to moderate (o.k. severe!) OCD.

And, if you are not sure exactly what goes where, they were nice enough to provide this diagram on the inside of the box cover.

The original Amazon listing incorrectly listed expansions that aren't actually included with this Z-Man big box version of Carcassonne. The Amazon description was later updated to correctly list the included expansions: Inns & Cathedrals, Traders & Builders, Flying Machines, Messengers, Ferries, Gold Mines, Mage & Witch, Robbers, and Crop Circles. Of these, all but Inns & Cathedrals and Traders & Builders are mini-expansions. Great game!

Pros: So many options the game never gets old. The box keeps everything organized and has space to spare. I ended up putting my other expansions in bags so everything can go into this one box. This makes taking the game to someone's house much easier. Expansions 1 & 2 are a must they add so much to the game and you would end up purchasing them anyway. Might as well get them all in one box. I have heard many people say Expansion 1 should just be part of the game away. As for the mini expansions you will love some and not care about others. They add some nice elements to the game. When I play with my family I'll throw 2~3 mini expansions in.

Cons: I only have two:

1. The River 1 is not included in the Big Box, yet it is included in the stand alone base game. If you want the River 2 purchase Expansion 6 (Count, King & Robber) like I did. The River 2 is better anyway but it would be nice if the River 1 was in this box.

2. If you purchase Expansion 2 (Traders and Builders) by it self the expansion comes with a large cloth bag to pull tiles from during the game. This is not included in this box. Would be nice if it was, not a deal breaker.

This is a very good game to have, it s very easy to teach, and very easy to pick up. At the basic game, you essentially draw 1x1 tiles and build onto the tiles placed by other players and place your Meeples to control a city, road, monastery, or field. The game is about tile placement and meeple management. The game is fast to set up and plays quickly. It is fast 30-40 min to play (with the base set only). My favorite thing about this game is that it is so simple and yet has a complex strategy. A 10 year old can play this game, and it is fun for my group of 25-35 year olds.

Big Box
This is a great game and a very affordable way to get several expansions for the game. I have 2 big complaints. The box is big, much bigger than most other game boxes. This makes taking the game around very difficult. Finally there are a lot of components, and the box is well designed with a plastic divider to keep the different expansions in separate places. The divider does not hold the pieces well. If the box is not kept perfectly level all the tiles spill inside the box. I like to take games with me when I go out of town, or to board game group meet ups. I have simply had to put rubber bands around the individual groups of tiles to keep the separated. A friend even took and bought a photo storage box and fit the entire big box in the photo box about 1/3 the size. I likely will also do this as recently the plastic divider is starting to tear (with only light use). The Box is why I am giving a 4 star review instead of a 5, The game is a 5 star game.

This is a great game. Some of the expansions are not as good as the original, but you have the option to pick and choose what you do.
