Product Description

From the Manufacturer

Agricola: Farmers of the Moor is a full-blown expansion to Agricola. It includes 150 cards, horse-shaped wooden pieces, many tiles, and a new scorepad. The mechanics include the need to heat your home during harvest as well as feeding your family; hence, fuel becomes a new resource to collect. Farmers of the Moor includes special actions and lots of new major improvements. It expands the options to your Agricola experience.

Product Description

Agricola: Farmers of the Moor is the first big expansion for Agricola. This expansion replaces the minor improvements and the occupations of the base game with a large set of new improvements, and adds a number of new features. Horses are introduced as a new type of animal, and your family members now cost fuel in addition to food. You can get this fuel by chopping down the forests on your farmyard, or by harvesting peat.

My wife, friends, and I love Agricola, so we were pretty psyched about the expansion. It serves to add a bit more complexity to the game, with additional things to manage and ways of winning. We've played with the expansion about half a dozen times, and I would recommend it for those who have played Agricola enough times to have seen most of the occupation / improvement cards, and are hankering for something new. For players new to Agricola, I would hold off on buying this expansion. The game is pretty complex as it is, and the expansion might be too much to keep track of at first. Here is a general summary of the pros and cons as I see them:

Pros: Huge additions to game play which really make the game fresh and exciting (new animals, new tiles for your farmland, new upkeep requirements, and a slew of new occupations / improvements. Adding new ways to gain points also means there are a lot of new strategies to pursue in order to win.

Cons: Added complexity could be confusing to new players. As with the original game, instructions aren't super-clear and require some learn-by-playing. Interestingly, a lot of the new major improvements don't seem to be very useful in the game (we haven't used a single one).

Agricola is an awesome game, but it suffers from a few significant flaws. The largest of these is that adding family members is so much more important than any other task that it becomes the sole focus of the early game. This was supposed to balanced by the requirement for additional food, but this is really a trivial issue for an experiences player.

Farmers on the Moore reduces this flaw with the addition of special actions. These are actions that can be taken without using your family members, which helps narrow the action deficit. Especially since the only way to use one that's already been taken is by spending food, something that smaller families will have in excess.

Other additions like forests, new improvements (major and minor), and the requirement to heat your home in winter also help to revitalize the game.

In my 4-man group, we played about a half of year with the expansion and we liked it for the first 4 months ... and then we hated it for the last 2.

The idea of heating the house, horses, and extra actions was well intended but had very bad consequences when looking back upon it. Every resource is abundant so there is no penalty for screwing up or punishing a player for a greedy play, also horses are uncapped at 1 point a piece so essentially you could have a monopoly on horses and get 15+ bonus points, and the extra actions make certain Round Actions worthless like Major/Minor.

My biggest gripe with this expansion is that it adds at least an hour+ to each game. The extra actions means more options, more options meant longer turns, longer turns meant lost interest, lost interest meant slower games, bickering, etc.

The scores were also ridiculous. Constantly the high score was 65+ where in a normal game with EIKWmG the winning score can range from 40-50 but isn't as big of a blowout as in the expansion.

The extra options meant there was less opportunity cost for misplays.

Overall, I think it seems like a great addition at first but when it comes down to it the adding of 1+ hours to a game make this not worth it. Stick with the Normal game and add the World Championship Deck from 2011 if you can find it and extra decks like Gamers, Netherlands, etc.

Just when we thought we finally mastered Agricola, we added on this expansion pack. The creators did a great job thinking everything through to make sure it all works out. With all the new additions, don't expect your farm life to be as productive as it before. Now the time really goes by fast, and there just never seems to be enough turns to do everything you want to do... and that is what makes for such an intriguing game. The original Agricola game was pretty challenging for us to learn since we were new to all the lingo. Now that we're familiar with the game, the expansion pack was very easy to learn and add on.

Just when you thought Agricola couldn't be more complicated, along comes Farmers of the Moor! In this addition, you will be adding turns to every round. The cool thing is that this can be an "evener". Even if you are playing last in a round, you can still choose some nice options to help you. This helps "even" out the play so that the first players don't have as much advantage. I like that. This game adds complexity: you will now need to heat your home in addition to feeding your family. You will also have to strategize how to clear your farm of trees and moors. I like the addition of horses. You can acquire horses that are worth one point each and there is no upper limit to how many points you can score with them. They have also added some very cool major improvements and made upgrading your home to clay or stone much more appealing.

This expansion adds about 30 minutes per player, so it isn't for the faint of heart. But I love it!

A great expansion to the base game of Agricola. It adds depth and new strategy to the game. I recommend.
