Book Description

2 and up
One noisy pig snores--Z-z-zoink!--and keeps the whole barnyard awake. The other pigs oink her away, the cows moo her away, the chickens cluck her away. Even the farmer and his wife can’t stand the noise and they shoo her away. Where is a snoring pig to sleep? Bernard Most leads readers on a merry search, and he finds one--just one--barnyard buddy who doesn’t mind a noisy pig’s snoring. Who-o-o? Who-o-o? Who-o-o could it be?

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

This one-joke paper-over-board book about a snoring pig who can't find a place to bed down for the night follows a simple pattern. After being kicked out of various homes by sleep-deprived pigs, cows, ducks and people, the pig finds a place with the barn owls, who stay awake all night anyway and greet her "Z-z-zoink!" with a "Who?" Most (A Pair of Protoceratops) has a good eye for strong graphics: he sets off the herds and flocks of animals (with one eye open all night and paws or hooves clapped over their offended ears) with flat, patterned backgrounds, and outlines the shapes with heavy, often scalloped lines. Despite the book's roundabout route to the punch line, children will enjoy chiming in on the animal sounds, and the crowds of animal faces are amusing. Ages 2-6. (May)

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-K-"There once was a pig that snored so loud...Z-Z-ZOINK!...she woke up all the other pigs! The other pigs oinked her away." She tries sleeping with cows, sheep, ducks, chickens, goats, and even frogs but is mooed, baaed, quacked, clucked, naaed, and gribbited away when she wakes them up. She even tries sleeping with the people in the house but is again turned away. The pig finally figures things out and goes to sleep with the barn owls. All of the ingredients for success are here: a quick pace, repetitive phrasing, a chance to participate by making animal sounds, a satisfying conclusion, and bright clear illustrations. Rendered in colored markers, the artwork will look familiar to fans of Cock-a-Doodle-Moo! (Harcourt, 1996). Children will enjoy Z-Z-Zoink! shared one-on-one or in storytime.

This review is from: Z-Z-Zoink! (Hardcover)
My daughter received this book for her 2nd birthday and picks it out every night to read. She loves to say z-z-zoink! as we read along and talks to all of the farm animals in the book. There is just the right amount of text on each page - no problem keeping a two year old's attention.
