A real page turning thriller,
This review is from: Z4ck (Paperback)
Z4Ck starts in the future, and through a flash-backs tells the story of a man who creates a magic bullet which allows him to circumvent security on the Internet. The book is realistic in the way the computer hacking is depicted, with wireless hacking, dumpster diving, and social engineering all included. Tools like Nmap and Nessus are mentioned. It's not however, too technical, so anyone with an interest in computers and the net can understand whats going on. It's a really easy read, that keeps you turning pages till the end. Thoroughly recommended.

Excellent book for techies and non techies alike.,

This review is from: Z4ck (Paperback)
This book has it all, great character development, excellent plot, several sub-plots....and just the right amount of technology to make it believable while not over-the-head of a non technical person.
You will find this a fast read, becuase the writing is fluid and really pulls you into the web of intrigue surrounding the main character. One of the best fiction books I have read in years. Not hardcore Sci-fi (a good thing) but a solidly written facinating tale that opens your mind up to the possibilities of what one person with a wealth of experience and knowledge could do in today's technological society. I'd say more, but that would spoil the many terrific surprises and twists that await you in this wonderfully written tome. I cannot wait to read more great novels from this new and refreshing author !!

Really good tech thriller,

Even if you are not into hacking and the computer landscape, this book is entertaining. It has some great suspense, plot twists, and some great tech stuff. Not Pulitzer material mind you, but very enjoyable read. Once you start, it is hard to put down. It reads pretty easy and flows very well. If you liked Hackers, Sneakers, and some others along those line - you will enjoy this book.

Poor writing, editing, and proofreading.,
By James Pulver (Fingerlakes, NY, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Z4ck (Paperback)
This may - *may* - be considered a somewhat technically accurate book, if you consider a version of metasploit that basically does all the hacking for you to the extent that you point it towards a target with an attack argument. The continued prop or conceit of thrashing of the HD with a squealing sound and the instant software based remote destruction of hardware makes the book's supposed technical accuracy laughable.
Aside from obvious "Hollywood" style hacking, the editing is non-existant and whoever proofread for punctuation should go back to the third grade. Constant missing quotes and mispellings. The dialog was unnatural, and the lack of using paragraphs to break out new dialog or speakers makes it almost painful to read. The characters were badly characterized and seemed one dimensional. The story was nothing new in the thriller genre, and in fact seemed like a school creative writing assignment that hadn't been graded yet. I also bought the sequal, thinking that perhaps the author would get better. He does not. Sadly, a waste of money. |
