Product Description

Your search for an iPhone 4 case, skin, or cover is now over. ZAGG's invisibleSHIELD is an exceptionally clear and virtually indestructible film that will protect your iPhone 4 from unsightly scratches. Our exclusive, patented film - with nano-memory technology - covers and shields your device, keeping it as pristine as the day you took it out of the box. Maximum coverage protects protects the entire device; Full body coverage protects the front screen and back; Screen coverage protects just the front screen of the iPhone 4. The precision pre-cut invisibleSHIELD applies directly to your iPhone 4, providing the toughest, most durable protection you will find. The invisibleSHIELD has its origins in the military, where it was used to protect high-speed helicopter blades from dust, dirt and debris. Now you can use that same powerful technology to protect your iPhone 4. The invisibleSHIELD is only .2 millimeters thick making it the slimmest iPhone 4 skin or cover of its kind. It is so tough that we back it with a lifetime guarantee. So, if it ever does wear or scratch, we will replace it for free, for the life of your device. And if you ever need to remove the invisibleSHIELD, no problem; it comes off clean and leaves no sticky residue. If you're still not convinced, check out our demo video and see for yourself how strong ZAGG's invisibleSHIELD really is.

I think anyone who's used both the ZAGG invisibleSHIELD and Power Support's Crystal Film Powersupport Combo Film Set for iPhone 4G 60-102123101 is going to prefer the latter to a wide degree -- it's just no competition.

I've had the PS Crystal Film on every iPhone since the first one and they're great. They improve the feel of using the touch screen (they make it a bit slipperier than the glass) and they don't interfere with the look (the anti-glare ones may -- I just use the regular film). They are not as a general matter "easy" to apply, but compared to ZAGG they're a cinch. And moreover, once they're on the phone, they are invisible and NEVER move.

The only reason I went with ZAGG this time is because PS didn't have films ready on iPhone launch day -- no idea why, but pretty strange. ZAGG did and I give them credit for that. BUT --

1) Installation

The ZAGG installation procedure is comically complex. It has a squirt bottle of water and a squeegee, people. Remember paying hundreds of dollars for this phone? And now you want me to SPRAY IT?

OK, fine, I'll spray it. I'll spray it and I'll squeegee it. I will be frightened but I will do it. But oh god, now that I've done it, you say I need to LEAVE THE PHONE ALONE FOR 24 HOURS? Are you *kidding*??? I just bought this! I want to play with it!

OK fine... I'll leave it for 24 hours... because you said if I didn't, the screen will peel off. So I left my beautiful new phone, on launch day, alone for 24 hours. I had to beg the AT&T guy not to shut off my old phone so that I could literally wait for ZAGG to dry. I waited 24 hours and put it in my pocket and... the front top right corner immediately peeled back. Oh hell no. I did the spray. I did the squeegee. I did the wait 24 hours. AND FAIL.

PS Crystal Film installation, by contrast? Similarly annoying to ZAGG in that they both want a dust free room (um, where?) but you literally just take the film out of the box, use the included sticky sheet to pull off the dust, carefully place on the PS film, and it's done. Immediately. No spray. No squeegee. No 24 hours. And it will never come off accidentally.

2) Look

As many others have posted, this is some kind of crazy rubbery plasticky business. It does not look good. I don't care what the other posters said about leaving it for 24 hours, or 48 hours, or a million hours. It still is a weird rubbery thing and even if you have managed to get all the air out, and even if you let it dry, there is a weird rippling/rainbow effect as you tilt the phone around. You will always notice it, and it will annoy you. It is because it is rubbery and can stretch or change thickness.

Moreover, when that corner comes up, it never really goes back down. I had people look at the phone and go "Um, what is up with that corner?" because it looks terrible. My sole goal at that point was keeping the film pressed down repeatedly to avoid scratching the glass until the PS film came.

Not to mention, self-healing? Survey says no. I ran my fingernails down the front of the screen as a test and it left scratches. They never "healed." They were always scratches, and they were always visible. Just using my fingernails.

PS film, by contrast: looks fabulous. Never peels up. No rainbow or warping effect because it is plastic and does not shift or bend. But -- it will also show scratches if you go at it.

3) Feel

The feel in your hand of the back of the phone and the sides of the phone when equipped with ZAGG is pretty pleasant, and that's why I give it two stars. The rubber does make it more grippable and you feel more secure holding it. HOWEVER...

The feel on the front of the screen is awful. Any time you're playing a game that requires quick swipes or any kind of detailed movement -- you will fail. It makes the resistance significantly more so. It is unpleasant.

And that nice rubbery texture when you're holding the phone? If you put it down on any surface - glass, polished wood, leather car seats -- it STICKS. It sticks to the point where it makes a sound when you lift it up. It sticks to the point where sometimes the film gets lifted up by whatever you put the phone on. I've had it happen with laminated ID cards in my wallet, with car seats, with my glass coffee table, etc. Not good.

PS, by contrast? Feels amazing. It feels better than the glass. It is so easy to work with the touch screen that it makes the iPhone better. It does not, however, help you grip -- and even the dual film package won't protect the sides.

Conclusion -- do not buy the ZAGG. The only part of the ZAGG I've left on is the back and the sides. The back hasn't peeled up yet in a way that makes it terrible, but I assume it will happen inevitably. Until then, I'll leave it to protect the back and I'll just be annoyed that it sticks to everything. The sides have been fine and I assume will protect the corners a bit. But the front -- oh, the front ZAGG came off the second PS came in the house and I've not looked back. Go Power Support.

I've been the biggest fan of Zagg until a few weeks ago. The screen protector I got for my iPhone 3G protected my phone well, came well packaged, with good instructions, etc.

The iPhone 4 cover on the other hand is a totally different animal.

1) the instructions are printed in a 2x2 piece of paper and they are completely generic, probably works with any stick on cover, so essentially no real instructions

2) came in essentially a paper envelope with the "covers" and a separate plastic bag with the "squeegee" and spray. The plastic bag looked like someone had sealed the sides by using a candle, packaging looked worthy of a $3 product, not a $25 one.

3) the "maximum protection" just means that you get a few little strips that you can paste around the phone. The strips are not the right size (all were too narrow and a little shorter than needed): probably a result of designing this product before the iPhone 4 was out

4) "maximum protection" leave still leaves all of the glass edges, the bottom of the phone (completely) and many other parts of the phone unprotected

5) They got stingy with the spray! really, the stuff is barely enough if you don't spray for the side strips and not enough at all otherwise. If you get a wrong application and have to re-apply: well you'll be asking for more spray from Zagg customer support

6) My attempt to correct an address on my Zagg order ended up with one call to some sort of VOIP driven customer service center which was too busy to handle my call and then a sequence of 5+ different emails asking me to send $2.95 more for shipping (this was a result of my error but the customer support mechanism is terrible).

7) The $2.95 above to get a new one sent is probably their actual cost to make this looking at the packaging and the presentation: knowing how well Zagg products were previously packaged (with ample spray stuff etc), this is really disappointing.

8) The spray evaporates in like a second (literally), so getting the things on is pure torture, be prepared to dedicate 30 mins of your life and 100% of your attention and you will still have an imperfect application

So, bottom line, now that I have it on the phone what do I think: well it covers most of the front and back of the phone well so scratches in those areas will probably be protected from, but I still need a cover for the edges since "maximum coverage" did nothing.

Disappointing from a company that I used to be a big fan of.

EDIT: and yes, the strips break at each of the antenna "junctions" on the phone and don't fully insulate from the hand touching the antenna, therefore NOT a solution to the iPhone 4 antenna issues.

I had some practice putting on the stick-on shields prior to getting this one. I also watched a youtube video on how to put it on. I like how it cuts down on glare and does not scratch. It's a little hard to put on, but once you get it on, it's worth it.

Too expensive and poor quality control
This is a VERY expensive screen protector that is poorly manufactured. The shield I received was not properly cut so it ripped and had jagged edges in some areas. Read more

Don't buy it
Zagg works good on SOME phones. Apparently this is not the case for iPhone 4S... it comes off so easily and it makes the screen feel as a rubber... don't waste your money...
