About the Author

Rihards Olups

Rihards Olups has over 10 years of experience in IT. He has had a chance to work with various systems, and most of that time has been spent with open source solutions. Exposure to Zabbix, one of the leading open source enterprise class monitoring solutions, was with the first public releases more than nine years ago, which has allowed to gain practical knowledge on the subject. Previously employed by a government agency, Rihards was mostly involved in open source software deployments ranging from server to desktop grade software, with a big emphasis on Zabbix. More recently the author has joined Zabbix SIA, the company behind the software that this book is about, which has allowed him to gain even more experience with the subject.

Format: Paperback
No fluff, no BS, the book is an end-to-end walk through of Zabbix 1.8. As per the sysadmins motto from Alice in Wonderland, "Start at the beginning and go to the end. Then stop." That essentially sums up the book.

Start with installation and configuration, then moves into the fairly complex twists and turns of configuring your first hosts and items and then alerting. The official Zabbix manual is perpetially "under construction" and poorly handles some of these aspects, making this book especially essential.

Several Zabbix features can be very confusing to configure, such as graphing and notification escalation. Once you understand the concepts its easy, but doing it the first time can be a very time consuming affair. Being walked through these kinds of processes, step-by-step and addressing each possibility as it arises makes it quick, painless, and informative.

If your new to Zabbix or haven't used it since 1.4, I recommend you save yourself hours of fiddling around and just grab the book. You'll get things done right, the first time and help ensure your success with Zabbix.

You can ask many IT professionals what a hardware failure can cost in time and productivity. There are some failures that you just can't fully recover from.

The need for solid network monitoring is VITAL.

Zabbix is opensource, and easy to work with. It runs on most linux distibutions, with a wealth of documentation on properly installing it. This book will get you up and running with monitoring on your network. Recieve notifications as events occur based on your criteria. You can learn how to monitor servers whether Linux or Windows, monitor processes, disk space, etc. You can also monitor any SNTP devices including (but not limited to) routers, switches, firewalls, printers, etc. You can also manage remote sites and devices using a Zabbix Proxy.

A must read for ALL IT professional.
