The best part of the Zagat, is the number of surveyed restaurants.I like the fact that the guide extends its survey all the way South to Monterey. Some "new" restaurants already graded in the Michelin are not fully graded in the Zagat ( Junnoon for example) .

The real problem with the Zagat approach is that it is too easy for a restaurant to stuff the ballot box with votes for itself. If you believe the restaurant descriptions here, you think that the worst 30-something restaurants in the Bay Area are packed with rich venture capitalists. It is more of a pickup bar guide than a reputable restaurant guide.

Inconsistent,

I used to live in another city, where Zagat was great and helpful when going out. However, I have found this Zagat to be inconsistent, unhelpful, and utterly incomplete. They have clearly tried to put too much into a short number of pages and end up with some gross errors and omissions. I find yelp and other online reviews much more helpful than this stagnant guide.
