Great if you have the money for fine dining, June 24, 2009
This review is from: Zagatsurvey 2009 Washington, DC Baltimore Restaurants (Zagatsurvey: Washington Dc/Baltimore Restaurants) (Paperback)
I love Zagat. I think it's a great system (aggregated reviews, not expert reviews) and I'm glad it exists to keep restaurants honest.
My copy is already beat up and torn, as it's just flimsy paper. I like the stickers that come inside it, like "Must Try" or "Love it!" that you can attach to any listing like a bookmark.
The plethora of restaurants in this edition is great, and the reviews are fairly detailed and remarkably accurate. I just hate, though, how they put actual quotations from reviewers inside quotes in the body of the review, as if they're afraid to paraphrase or summarize the users' experiences without using verbatim language.
They don't spend enough of the book reviewing affordable places, but for that, one might be better off with Frommer's or Fodor's. They do a great job, however, of at least *listing* the cheapest, the best in any category, and the best of any location.
I found the internal maps lacking vastly in the number of placed restaurants, but that's partially due to the format of the book.
Overall, this one is great and a non-regrettable purchase. I'm glad it's cheap, too, because the vast majority of its restaurants listed are NOT.
