5.0 out of 5 stars Unique
This is quickly growing dated, but the Zagat Music Guide is quite good. True, as with any product based on surveys, the ratings won't line up with anybody's personal tastes exactly, but that doesn't negate many of the guide's assets. The book's boldest strength is its ecumenical purity; all music is rated against all other types of music. As a result, the guide not...

2.0 out of 5 stars What a joke! Two stars for a creative way to squeeze out cash
In an poor attempt to make some money (like putting out guides to every other city is not enough) Zagat goes and creates a list of 1000 CDs that they consider to be the best of all time. Sounds great... if you don't know anything about music. The whole list reads like a great companion to the NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL MUSIC series for the people who only listen to the Top...

Sounds great... if you don't know anything about music. The whole list reads like a great companion to the NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL MUSIC series for the people who only listen to the Top 40.
If you are serious in your music tastes, stay away and stick with Pengiun guides.

P.S.: Zagat, please stop the "quotations", it's a pain to read and besides we get it already... you're quoting reviewers

The book's boldest strength is its ecumenical purity; all music is rated against all other types of music. As a result, the guide not only covers all genres, but it also serves as an excellent map to exploring new avenues of the musical world. Interested in opera? Try the top-rated works here. Blues? Look at the list of blues albums. Sure, it has flaws, but any guide that includes Surfer Rosa, Kind of Blue, Beethoven's Ninth, Blood on the Tracks, and Howlin' Wolf jumbled all together is not going to be boring or to steer you far wrong...
