Beware of German Import CDs...,
By MW "MW" (NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Zager and Evans - In the Year 2525 and Zager and Evans (2 albums on 1 CD) (Audio CD)
Here I was hoping to listen to two classic rare recordings by a duo who had one of the biggest hits of 1969. Well after listening, it was hard to tell if I was listening to a CD or an old album that someone had used as a frisbee sometime. There are more snaps, clicks, pops, skips & scratches on this CD then my old record albums. This is just another rip-off import CD put together by someone looking to make a fast buck. There is no quality on this CD because basically it is two very used albums transferred directly to disc. Don't waste your money here. Hopefully someone in the future will put out these gems in some form of remastering. The music is still worth waiting for.

A sadly underrated duo,
By Bobcat Wallace "Mr. Bobcat" (Tyler, TX United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Zager and Evans - In the Year 2525 and Zager and Evans (2 albums on 1 CD) (Audio CD)
This CD is a blend of Zager and Evans' first two albums: 2525 (Exordium and Terminus) and their eponymous 2nd album. Listen to this and you're in for a treat. Rick Evans is one of those rare genius songwriters, and I rank him with Ray Davies, Noel Gallagher and other genius songwriters. The only problem is Mr. Evans isn't so highly ranked by others. The songs on this CD contain other songs which should have been hits but never were.
One is called "Taxi Man" and contains not only a groovy guitar solo but lyrics which reflect the political spectrum of the time: "I wanna find me some hawks and conservatives .... I wanna find me some doves and some liberals ..." Another is a chilly tale called "The Candy Machine" and if you think "In the Year 2525" is creepy -- this one is even creepier! It's the story of a man who covers his friends "with chocolate ice cream and jelly beans" and freezes them! (I would love to fill you in on the rest but that would deprive you of experiencing the chill and creepiness of the song.) This CD contains two versions of a song that should've been a 2nd hit for Zager and Evans: "Mr. Turnkey", the tale of a lonely man who meets a woman in a bar. Claiming she led him on, he rapes her --- and winds up in prison. Unable to live with himself, unable to handle his conscience, he kills himself, and his last words are "Tell her I'm sorry." The other songs are ditties about ex-girlfriends ("Cary Lynn Javes"), true love ("Less Than Tomorrow"), among other things. There's even an Italian-language version of "In the Year 2525." One listen and you'll wonder why in the Sam Hill Zager and Evans were one hit wonders instead of superstars.

This review is from: Zager and Evans - In the Year 2525 and Zager and Evans (2 albums on 1 CD) (Audio CD)
Well, I will admit, the sound quality is not the best, but I had both mint condition records, when I had my record collection, the discs had alot of ambient noise. The song "Candy Machine" in the quiet trailoff has several snaps and pops, which were also present on my record. Initially, I was confused by the "damage" to a mint record, but didn't worry about it. Now, I am beginning to suspect it was intentional background noise. Maybe the Germans just happen to buy a very similiar record to myself. Likewise, "In the Year 2525" there is a strange electronic reprocessing buzz, making the music sound recorded many times over.
The music is more bubble gummy than I remember, but still well written and catchy. I recommend this album set. Too bad "The Early Writings of Zager and Evans" isn't available, too. Hydra 15000 is a classic...must find! I recall having five or six Zager and Evans LPs, but I can only remember 4, right now.
