It's OK. Each one of these Basic Architecture Series books from Taschen consists of an introductory essay about the architect in question, and a subsequent section of the theur most important projects, each one accompanied by photos, plans and text. The introductory essay in this book is excellent. It leaves clear what Zaha is about, elaborating on the philosophy behind her formal ideals, how technological history has shaped her views and the response from the architectural community about her work, as well as her personal opinions. But the projects section is vague, in the sense that you cannot get a grasp about a project if it is not explained appropriately (I do not expect an exhaustive description per work - this is "Basic Architecture"); the texts only focus on form, as if form were the unique purpose of architecture, which isn't so. I recognize that Zaha's work has had its repercussions considerably because of its form - but how does her innovation in form creates spatial program and how it is accomplished, technically speaking. The photo captions are vague and could have not been necessary to be written at all in some cases, as they are not relevant enough in providing complementary information to the text. The book leaves too many questions unanswered, for my expectations, in the respects of context, program, and technology about each work. Two to four more sentences per project page should have sufficed to explain on materiality, structure, and so on. So, I consider this to be a good purchase considering the price, but it could have been more appropriate in order to be a basic monograph on the subject of architecture proper, as it aims to be, I suppose.
