I saw this simple little gadget on Martha Stewart. I knew I needed it. I absolutely hate peeling garlic. Sometimes, it takes me longer to peel the garlic than to prepare the other vegetables. What a pain! My husband taught me how to smash the garlic clove with the side of my knife. That breaks the skin and you can peel it easier, but it can still be persnickity at times. I've been buying jarred garlic for years to avoid the annoyance.

So when I saw this I thought - ooh this looks like something that would work for me. And it does! The first time I used it I went "Aha!" It works simply and it works well. You put the clove inside and simply press as you roll the clove inside the tube. You'll hear a crack and that's it! Pull out the clove, and it will separate into skin and clove. No more peeling. I was having so much fun rolling the garlic cloves and peeling them that I did way more than I needed, and had to bag the extra cloves. Whee!

This peeler is one of the most helpful kitchen gadgets I've ever bought for myself.

I already have one of these things that I bought in the grocery store for $10, but it's a boring white, and I like colorful tools (easier to find!) I LOVE this for peeling garlic - it's fast and easy, peels perfectly, and so easy to give a fast rinse and re-use.

Beware that if your order the "green" you may receive a color that's more of a teal or dark forest green - NOT the lovely lime green shown in the picture. Fortunately I have Amazon Prime, and there was no problem returning this item (they even paid the return shipping!) and re-ordering it in another color. I've ordered red, and hope that it's a better color match than the green!

Really like this garlic peeler. It definitely saves time when peeling garlic. It was such a tedious job before trying to get all of the thin pieces of peel off of the garlic by hand. I sometimes even bought chopped garlic in the jar just to avoid this task, but nothing like fresh garlic in your recipes. Depending on the size of the garlic cloves, you can fit 2 or 3 cloves in the peeler at one time and peel. I do still cut the tip off of the garlic which probably isn't necessary. You literally give it 2 or 3 rolls on the counter top and the entire peels are removed! Love it. One note about the green color, the one I received was more of a kelly green and not the bright green shown in the picture.

I bought this as it was recommended by Cook's Illustrated. It works as described, and quickly removes peels from a small number of cloves. There are a few finer points, however:
The cloves should be more or less the same size, or the larger ones will prevent contact with the smaller ones and you will have to send them through again.
You need to learn the proper pressure to apply to peel the cloves without crushing them. It's not rocket science, but a little experience will improve results.
If you don't mind crushed cloves, it is easier and faster to whack them with the side of a knife to get the peel off than it is to dig this out and have to clean it afterwards.
For large numbers of cloves or entire heads of garlic, there are far more efficient methods involving bowls.

Four stars, as it is situationally useful, but not earth shattering.

I'm giving this a 4-star because it seems to do best with only one or two pieces of garlic at a time and as I use a lot of garlic, it would be nice if I could do a few more cloves at once. The tube is just too short for that. Technically, it is just one extra kitchen gadget for the drawer, and one I could live without, but I prefer to live with. I like it quite a bit, and it does do the job and does it well. Yes, I can smash cloves with a knife and pick the peel off, but this is easier and as I'm not able to apply a lot of pressure to a knife blade, the peel seems to come off better for me. A quick rinse under the faucet and it is clean. The green color looks nice in my kitchen.

I never knew such a tool existed but I'm happy I stumbled upon it. I bought this in conjuction with the garlic twist and they make the job so much easier. My only complaint is that the peeler can still make a mess. My first use was to peel 6 cloves of garlic for a soup recipe. Some of the skins stayed inside but most came out and began getting all over the place. I had to keep the garbage nearby so after each clove I could try to shake out the residual skins. When I was all done it took just a simple rinse under water to clear out all the skin remnants. I guess I could have used the rinse inbetween each clove but I'm not sure if the wetness would interfere. It'd be nice if the tool had flaps at each end so you could keep the skins inside while in use.

I do like this product, When I saw it I tried to simulate the action with a silicone baking mat but it just didnt work. The only qualm I have is that it can only do 2-3 at a time. If you put more in it falls out on the sides. I was looking for a bigger one from this brand, but havent found any. I thought the red or blue ones were bigger because the price was higher, but I was mistaken.

It may seem like an unnecessary item, but if you cook with a lot of garlic, you know how sticky and tedious it can be to peel. Especially if you want nice, whole (not smashed) cloves. The force with which you roll the cloves in the peeler determines the outcome, but it makes fast clean work of peeling lots of garlic at a time in no time flat. Excellent restaurant apparatus.

Short of smashing it with a blunt instrument which is the VERY easiest but leaves something of a mess. If the garlic is very fresh it can be stubborn, but in most cases it works fine. (Except when I was showing it off to my brother-in-law, when of course it went very cranky on me. Not fool-proof, but given the price, definitely worth having.

I love garlic, but I do not love how it makes my hands smell. This product is great. You can even peel several garlic at once. Some people said does not work that well.....I think the problem is that you need to put the garlic in the middle and lay the peeler on a flat hard surface and roll back and forth quickly. It works in seconds!
