5.0 out of 5 stars From Africa to Alaska--this is the boot, February 22, 2010

I was a Game Ranger in South Africa and Tanzania in 2002. When I wasn't working, I was on my own private expeditions and getting into trouble mostly. But I never had to worry about my feet. These boots actually cured my heel problem when I put my weight down--planter??? something or another. When I returned home to the States--broke and broke down, my feet were still good, after walking hundreds of miles through mountains, forests, rocks and African streets. Get these boots--take care of them. You will come to love them. Only now am I buying a second pair for another round of expeditions. Having once served in the US Marine Corps, I know about hiking for a living and would stake my life on these boots.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Fit, November 23, 2010

SSUMM (Sacramento, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This is my favorite hiking boot. I've had a pair for many years and have put several hundred miles on them. They were comfortable when I first put them on and did not need any breaking in other than walking about the neighborhood. They have an excellent heel counter, ergo no blisters. They are slightly narrow across the the forward part of the foot so make sure you order an extra half size plus whatever you add to prevent your toes from hitting the front of the boot when hiking downhill. The leather is thick but the boot flexes well. There is a good energy exchange/balance between flexing and straightening the sole when walking which makes its seem as if the boots assist you in hiking, i.e., it did not tire my feet when hiking long distances and I always leave them on after hiking as they are so comfortable. I did get some cracking across the front crease of the boot after about five years but this was typical of all the leather boots I have worn.

I am now in some Raichle boots as I couldn't find the Civetta when it was time to replace them. Although the quality is equal the heel counter is loose and the soles feel dead and tire my feet during a long hike.

Good luck. Check REI.com for more reviews and different models.
