Editorial Reviews

Sprouting from the same mind that created the Books one of the most acclaimed and innovative groups of the past decade Zammuto marks a deep reinvention of the highly detailed, genre-defying spirit that made seminal albums such as The Lemon of Pink and The Way Out possible. Given the Books success as an experimental collage-pop project, founder and namesake Nick Zammuto could have comfortably extended that thread. Instead he has given us a record that is progressive and forward-looking, intense and driven, with hugely varied rhythms and melodies.

I saw these guys open for Explosions in the Sky a while back and was wowed by their performance. I bought their CD and wasn't disappointed. The experimental nature found in Nick Zammuto's previous "pop-collagist" band, The Books, is still heavily apparent in the sound of the band (I'm not quite sure you'll find a parallel to Zammuto, as is the case for The Books). But the chaotic, random sampling has been swapped for a more regular musical structure and traditional band setup that prompts a healthy amount of foot-tapping and head-nodding.
Buy this.
Support the unorthodox.
And also see them live if you get a chance. The interplay between their music and their awesomely edited videos makes for great fun.

Solid release. I look forward to what Zammuto has to offer in the future. It reminds me of the Pinback side project Prints.

I discovered this band in the unlikeliest place - Design Bureau magazine. It was in a piece about the styles - architectural/furniture/otherwise - of different bands/artists...like 'cribs' for the avant guard.

Okay, into the album - I never heard 'The Books', the previous band Nick Zammuto was part of, but I'm thinking about looking them up after hearing this album. It's spacious with affected vocals and electronic instruments interspersed with acoustic or traditional instruments. That's a very basic description for an album that's very, very difficult to describe. Most mash-ups of electronic and traditional music drive me bonkersauce, but there's a lack of pretension here. It's not ironic in any way, and there's none of the fuzzed out beach-sound that's gotten so infuriatingly popular in modern indie music lately. The treated nature of the vocals and some of the instruments contrasts perfectly with the organic percussion or guitars.

The album opens with 'Yay', and the title is a good descriptor of the song, with slow-swinging, echoey bass drums, electronic organ, and eventually bass guitar topped with frenetic closed-cymbals, sticks, and rimshots led by a cycling but heavily chopped and staccato treated vocals. It's a great introduction to what you've got in store for you in this album, although it's a lot simpler than many of the other songs.

Give it a listen...and give it a chance.
