Book Description

March 13, 2006
Zanesville is located in a geographically fortuitous location in the southeastern part of the state, juxtaposed between the Licking and Muskingum Rivers and rich veins of clay, natural gas, and coal. Settled in 1797, Zanesville grew and prospered over the next 200 years as a transportation hub and a pottery-and tile-manufacturing center. Known for decades as either “Clay City” or the “Y-Bridge City,” Zanesville retains its charm and small-town qualities through its architecture, neighborhoods, parks, schools, downtown buildings, churches, and numerous bridges that crisscross the city. As you explore Zanesville’s historic past, you may find yourself reminiscing about earlier days and learn why so many people have called Zanesville home.

I read this book cover to cover at home, then I put the book in my car. Now, whenever I am out and about, I can compare historical photographs to the actual locations around town. It is so fascinating! I gave this book to a hard-to-buy for man for Christmas, and he says it was his favorite gift this year! My brother also has a copy, and he takes his from location to location as well. Highly recommended if you are curious about the history of your hometown!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great pictorial of Zanesvile, Ohio's history, May 11, 2010
By

This review is from: Zanesville (OH) (Images of America) (Paperback)
For those who do not know, Zanesville, Ohio has been known as the pottery capital of the world. This book is a pictorial of its history and all the unique architecture that goes along with it. It is missing a few great buildings, such as the County Home which was formerly a hospital during the Civil War. Zanesville is one of the oldest towns in history and was settled by the McIntire family and the Matthews family. I would have appreciated a little more narrative regarding the pictures, as well as the extensive industry that was occurring during the early 1900s, late 1800s. Zanesville is a fascinating town, rich in history, pottery (i.e. think of Hartstone Pottery, Fiestaware, etc.) and industry. Great book, especially appreciated the synopsis of Tom's Ice Cream Bowl, one of the most famous ice cream/sandwich restaurants in the country. Highly recommend!
