This is an unusual book. It starts in Italy in the late 18th century and tells of a woman and four men who are competing for her. Then there's a long section in which one of the men experiments with black magic but ends up deciding that he prefers women. The last part jumps to France for no discernible reason, and follows three of the original characters during the last days of Robespierre and the Reign of Terror. It's not just of story about some people- there are loads of themes like good vs evil, self-sacrifice, unrequited love, dedication, the occult, etc. I like how Lytton writes, but he often gets carried away and goes on for page after page on a subject. It's a long book, but you can easily shorten it by skimming through those long-winded passages. At the end of the book Lytton explains the symbolism he used for each character, which is a nice bonus.
