Zantac is a Good Place to Start in Treating Heartburn, October 7, 2005
This review is from: Zantac 75 Tablets, 80-Count Bottle (Health and Beauty)
Zantac is low-cost, over-the-counter medication that consumers can buy without a prescription. It is used to treat persistent heartburn and stomach ulcers. Zantac works by decreasing the secretions of stomach acids. When too much stomach acid is produced, some can "leak" out in a retrograde fashion and move into the esophagus, where it can burn the lining of the esphagus and cause the sensation of heartburn. Zantac is also used to treat stomach and esophageal ulcers.
Zantac is as equally effective as Tagamet, another anti-acid medication in the same class as Zantac. Zantac is not as potent as Prilosec or Prevacid, both very srong stomach acid inhibitors. For those with occasional bothersome mild heartburn, Zantac is a good place to start in terms of treatment. It is relatively cheap, and it is effective in controlling mild cases of heartburn. However, in more persistant and serious cases, one may consider taking the more potent (and more costly) Prilosec or Prevacid. The latter two medications generally work in cases where Zantac and Tagamet will not.
Zantac is taken about 30 minutes to an hour before eating foods that commonly cause heartburn. The lead time is essential to decreasing stomach acid output before ingesting food. Zantac can be taken up to twice per day.
Zantac is a good place to start treatment of heartburn. If it does not do the job for you, consider moving on to Prilosec and/or Prevacid.

Eliminate Stomach Acid Buildup, April 15, 2007
Zantac 75 is one of several antacid products that I use on a weekly basis and my main reason for using this product is to prevent acid reflux. If I know I will be overindulging in food and drink, I pop one of these tablets to eliminate the chances for an eruption of stomach acid during the night. These tablets work like a charm, eliminating practically any chance for an acid reflux episode during the evening hours. Even if I have been eating very close to bedtime, one Zantac 75 tablet is all I need to give me peace of mind.
Zantac 75 is also effective for eliminating heartburn and acid indigestion after the symptoms have already made themselves known. My experience with Zantac 75 when used to eliminate heartburn that already exists is good, but not great. I find that Zantac 75 takes a little longer to get working than some other heavy- duty antacids I commonly use. Also, it depends on the severity of the problem. If I experience a small amount of stomach pain from overeating, Zantac 75 has no problem attacking the acid and eliminating the pain. But if acid reflux is the problem, Zantac 75 takes a little longer to get the job done. It is still superior to the ordinary, calcium based antacids, but not as effective as some of the other brands of acid reducers.
These tablets are small and easy to take and I appreciate the fact that they are sealed individually, in blister units. This greatly reduces the chances that a young child could open the package and accidentally consume some of the tablets. The packaging keeps each individual tablet safe, dry, and ready for use.
Overall, Zantac 75 is a very good acid reducer that functions best when used as a preventative medicine to stop stomach acid buildup before it gets out of hand. It isn't as good when used for instant relief, but it still performs its job quite well in either instance. It isn't the best acid reducer on the market, but it does perform better than average and I will continue to buy it from time to time when stomach acid becomes a serious problem.

Zantac, September 6, 2011

Zantac is quite effective and is safer than PPIs. Definitely worth a try before embarking on more heavy-duty acid treatments.
