Troutman's Treasure,
By
This review is from: Zapp (Audio CD)
Yes, this was definitely the album that contained the famous Zapp synthesized-vocoder sound with the R & B Funk-smash More Bounce To The Ounce (all 9 minutes) ! This was before rap and hip-hop, etc., etc. There's the mesmerizing guitar sound on Freedom (with a Jesse Johnson feel)...Any true Zapp fan has to have this on c.d. before it becomes obsolete or hard to find. The worst that could happen is it could wind up on an import list where you have to buy the c.d. at a ridiculous import price (yes, it happens). This is one soul essential necessary for an R & B music collector. Roger Troutman definitely left a remarkable legacy and made a tremendous impact, not just for R & B, but for the pop and dance genre as well !

This One Song Changed The Face Of Black Music...,
By A Customer
This review is from: Zapp (Audio CD)
While this artist and LP have a definate P-Funk influence, Roger Troutman is no less a brilliant musician himself. The same way James Brown took the African-American experience (like Hendrix, Sly Stone & others) to a different level, so did Roger & Zapp with "More Bounce To The Ounce." It was, and is, like nothing ever heard before. Just like Larry Graham's bass changed the face of R/B and funk, so did "More Bounce." The whole 9 minutes of the song is irresistable. It opened the door for street funk, which gave way to another type of "funk": Hip-Hop and Rap. This one song has probably been "sampled" the most by young rappers and R/B artists alike...and they continue to this day! This LP is a defining moment in Black music. Not only is Roger a master at the "talk box" (that computerized voice thing you hear) his deep blues committments come shining through. Enjoy this LP. They had to re-issue it, the grooves never cooled off. :-)

Sophisticated funk at its finest,
By Ed Thompson (Atlanta, Georgia - USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Zapp (Audio CD)
The 1980 self-titled album by Zapp (by Roger and Zapp Troutman) is one of the finest funk albums ever produced. Listen closely for the influences of Bootsy Collins (producer) and Parliament/Funkadelic. The hit single from the album, More Bounce to the Ounce, introduced the world to Roger Troutman's trademark use of the vocorder, but the real gem of the album is the slow and sultry Be Alright. There is not a bad cut in this six song album. If you're a fan of late 70s and early 80s funk, this selection is a "must have".

Zapp Yourself With Some Brand New Players!!!,
By
This review is from: Zapp (Audio CD)
Although existing for a couple previous years as The Human Body Zapp along with their leader Roger Troutman and company really made a splash in the world on this album, surely one of a handful of true funk classics.Produced by none other then Bootsy Collins himself this will probably always be known as the place to find "More Bounce To The Ounce" in all it's nine plus minute glory-THE song not only most representative of this band but of the whole electro funk movement in general;an all time classic. But what comes next?Three MORE slices of hefty funk in the amazing "Freedom","Brand New Player" and "Funky Bounce".These tunes don't have the heavy eletronic moog bass thump of the hit but emphasize the sound of the band itself, the slapping bass, the funky drummer and Roger's playful way with the bluesy rhythm guitar. They are without question helped along by none other then James Brown's former bassist (Boosty at the control booth) and the sheer charisma of these musicians-Roger included."Be Alright" offers a wonderful sing-a-long slice of modernized gospel inflected soul and from there it's right on the the shuffling mixture of Motown and blues of "Coming Home" and it makes a GREAT combination. What really surprises me about Zapp in general is the great melodies and pop hooks they are always able to throw into their heavy, blues sprinkled funk. There are bands that can jam and there are bands that can JAM out a tune-THAT's Zapp! And you'll find that here as well as on Zapp II,Zapp III and every other bit of music Roger got his hands on!So if you want a party on your CD player where everyone is invited this more then worth your while!

Intoxicating rhythm,

You must have this cd! There is no other logical solution. Every song is completely amazing. The first time I heard More Bounce to the Ounce was on the car radio about 1 month ago and at the momment I knew this is what I was looking for when I want to shake some booty anytime, anywhere. It would be worth the price of admission if only for the title track but believe me the whole program is out of sight y'all. Don't be foolish - trust in Zap and you will be released from whatever dungeon you've been in and lifted up into the kingdom of audio visualization!

Straight Givin' Up The Funk,

The 1980 classic debut album by Zapp, with production by Roger Troutman and Bootsy Collins (of P-Funk fame)is a one-way trip to funkville. The 9 minute classic "More Bounce To The Ounce" introduces the world to Roger's trademark talkbox over a deep-groove lowrider ready beat. If you live in So. Cali, you'll hear this jam blaring out of Impalas' sound systems sittin on D's. The song does not have many lyrics except for a hook and some phrases here and there, a trademark of many of Zapp's jams. Those type songs are reserved for groovin' on the dancefloor, and are perfect as they are. I love the uptempo twangy, guitar-ridden groove. It is easy to hear a P-Funk influence here. There is an element of soul in the jam "Be Alright." It has a slightly softer vibe and has nice harmony and is cool for chilin' with ya boo. Of course, this song regained infamy as it was sampled in 2Pac's classic hip-hop joint "Keep Ya Head Up" from 1993. "Brand New Player" is a cool, twangy swingin' joint about a cat who is cool and has mad mack for the ladies. I love the jazzy hook with the ladies harmonizing. More talkbox madness abounds on "Funky Bounce," a self-explanatory jam which is tailormade for the disco clubs of the early 80's. "Coming Home" is a faster-paced harmonica laden jam that is for getting with the ladies. Zapp ruled the 80's with their deep-groove funk and dance floor ready numbers, and that all started here with this bangin' debut. Fans of P-Funk should definitely check for this one provided such fans have not already had this in their collections for decades.

Birth of the Talkbox,
By Funkman (Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Zapp (Audio CD)
This is the album that had everyone trying 2 sound like a robot one time or another.Roger(R.I.P)and his brothers laid down the blueprint for west coast hip hop with this album.More bounce was far ahead of it's time. There was no traditional verse, chorus, verse etc. in the song Roger just rolled the tape and jammed. The talkbox is not an easy instrument 2 play, especially the way roger did it and that's why he's a "Genius" because he made it sound and look so easy. There would be no gangsta rap if it weren't for Roger&Zapp.

Essential Funk Classic,

Includes the incredible "More Bounce To The Ounce." This song is a funk staple and will only get better with time and age. Zapp produced some of the best funk ever put on wax. The album is solid and will not let up until the album ends. It is worth the money! Own this album now! Plus.."Be Alright" is an amazing jam! I love that song. Zapp was the music the "gangstas" listened to before "Gangsta Rap."
