Editorial Reviews

Review

"Ed Zellem is the first to deliver Afghan Proverbs to the world outside Afghanistan in other languages. In doing so he has contributed something unique and valuable to the world, and he has done so with his own personal hobby.  I think these books help serve the cause of peace through better cultural understanding and communication."
     - General David H. Petraeus (U.S. Army, ret.)

"Mahee-ra har waqt az aab biggeree, taazaa ast. Whenever you take a fish from water, it is always fresh - meaning there is always potential for a new start."
       - Howard Altman, senior writer and military affairs correspondent for The Tampa Tribune, TBO.com and WFLA-TV

"The foundation of a culture is language. Edward Zellem's work of Afghan Proverbs at this critical moment is a tool for integration, communication and sharing values. An excellent compilation."
-Dr. Farid Younos, Afghan-American TV personality, host of the Dr. Younos Show on NOOOR-TV, and professor at California State University-East Bay

"Captain Zellem's collection is an outstanding work that underscores our common humanity."
    - Dwight Jon Zimmerman, New York Times #1 best-selling author

"The books are a wondrous novelty in many cases. They help encourage a reading habit, to spread the word that reading need not be just for information but can be fun as well."
       - Nancy Hatch Dupree, author, historian and founder of the Afghanistan Center at Kabul University

A wonderful collection of proverbs which are beautifully illustrated by talented Kabul High School students. The proverbs are written in Dari, then spelled out phonetically, and translated and explained in english on each page. Interesting how some are so similar to common sayings in America. I love that all proceeds go to Kabul University and Marefat High School to support literacy programs. Well done Capt. Zellem!

Zarbul Masalha is a remarkable literary work that provides deep insight into Afghan culture and language. Proverbs contain a great treasure of folk culture and wisdom, and often express an idea better and more convincingly than lengthy speeches or text. Captain Zellem's translations from Dari to English, and associations with common well known proverbs, provide outstanding insight into Afghan thought and customs. Captain Zellem's personal experiences in Kabul, his remarkable effort to include local Afghan students in the creation of Zarbul Masalha, and his ongoing efforts to introduce Afghan culture and language through the publication of this book, demonstrate his passion and insight into Afghan language and culture. This book is a "must read" for anyone interested in understanding Afghan culture and clearly demonstrates that universal, common ideas do exist among different cultures.

Captain Ed Zellem helps bring real, daily Dari to life through the use of popular proverbs that Afghans use throughout each and every conversation. No language training is complete without this body of knowledge. Afghans are always impressed, if not amused, when they hear foreigners using a proverb or two to get a point across clearly. With all this seriousness, though, you can tell that both he and the kids from the Kabul high school had fun putting it together.

Received my copy of Zarbul Masalha yesterday, an intention to peruse a few pages last night quickly turned into a cover-to-cover read. I pressed my copy into the hands of a deploying Serviceman this morning with a hope, prayer and firm belief that Captain Zellem's work would bring him a closer understanding and help bridge the gap between cultures. At one time the U.S. maintained a productive outreach program globally; unfortunately, since the late '70's, we have defunded such programs as VoA, the Reading Rooms, et al. The void once filled first hand with a message of peace and engagement has been filled with the voices of radical fundamentalism; we now stand apart from regions of the world where we once were met with freely outstretched hands. Only through embracing foreign cultures may we bring peace through common understanding, in that context we may forge the bonds of friendship in those who were once adversaries and brotherhood from those who were once only friends. Captain Zellem superbly embodies such a philosophy and his scholarly work is an excellent step toward accepting differences by defining commonality ... proverbs are short sayings based on obvious truth or commonly held perceptions ... many of the proverbs Captain Zellem quotes from this old culture have equivalents in the West and serve to highlight shared life experiences as humans though separated in time and geography. While relatively few in the U.S. will have an opportunity to visit Afghanistan, this book will still provide insight to the thoughts of a people that we may meet on our own streets and the possibility for shared respect ... "Ehteraam ba digaraan, ehteraam ba khod ast". Awarded a four only in that the inclusion of more Western equivalent proverbs would strengthen the impact and it's not yet available in Kindle.

A great read providing fabulous insight into the Afghan mindset and the framework through which Afghans view the world. Additionally, proceeds from the book support great bastions of education in Afghanistan and help ensure a bright future for its young people. CAPT Zellem has created a great tool to bridge the gap between cultures and peoples. Every classroom in every school the the US would do well by having a copy of ZM on it's shelves.

With its proverbs displayed one-per-page and illustrated with art work by Afghan students, this appears to be a thoughtful gift book for Afghans and those interested in its language and culture. But it is also a useful book. Every Dari language book has sections on idioms and proverbs, but I have heard a number of these proverbs used in conversation in Afghanistan and I did not understand them until re-reading them here. Indeed, there are proverbs here that merit essays on the insight they provide into Afghan life and culture. A worthwhile read for any English speaker dealing with Afghanistan regardless of their level of proficiency (or ignorance) of Dari.
